So, I currently run XP black x64 and its pretty nice and all (considering it is heavily modified from windows' original version), but I always have this back thought in my head about using linux. More specifically ubuntu.
I'm no guru though, so I don't know what to tell myself to convince myself to switch.
I do C++ programming, a little ActionScript, facebook and other browsing (chrome mainly, sometimes firefox), music, gaming (pretty heavy gaming, find steam very handy), and anime.
Do you guys think I should switch or just keep my XP? And why?
Thanks in advance, really appreciate it! :D

Try installing Ubuntu on virtualbox (http://www.virtualbox.org/) or wubi (http://wubi-installer.org/) first. You can keep your OS and run Ubuntu in a virtual environment. It's like training wheels for the noob.

Here's a video of virtualbox:

careful with black that is pirated software and probably has malware embedded in it. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1399035/windows_xp_black_edition.html?cat=15

@rogue. thanks, I'll check that out.

@presence. thanks for the concern. I got a more popular one and checked it for safety before installing though, but with normal windows it's almost like malware in itself.

The community here is also much better than... 97% of other communities I've belonged to!

you could try dual booting. just install ubuntu and keep both OS's.

I hear you but scanning in itself is not good enough with pirated software. Did you actually look at the code and see what is there? If pirated software had a blatant virus/trojan on it no one would use it because their malware scanners would detect it. Pirated software usually has nastys in the code.

Also my friend downloaded pirated Adobe Acrobat. His scans from windows turned up nothing. I brought my Avira system rescue CD (http://www.free-av.com/en/products/12/avira_antivir_rescue_system.html)and booted from that, updated the definitions and scanned his disk. Not only were trojans detected on the Adobe software but also on his system too. With Windows you really want to run a scan with windows not running.

Lesson learned over & over again by unfortunate many: stay away from pirated software.
