I have scanned images on my computer that need to be shaded and filled with colour. Unfortunately, scanned images will not fill very well as the pencil shading and pen ink gets all over the image. So...the only way to do this is to make a transparent layer and create paths over all the hard lines on the image to later go back and fill in the negative space after the paths have been stroked. This can be extremely tedious, taking anywhere from an hour or more per image. Does anyone know how to make Gimp recognize and highlight hard lines on an image? Perhaps something of the like? Any help would be appreciated to make this a less excrutiating task. Thanks.

* open your scanned image (i assume that this is black/dark pencil on white/light paper).
* create anew transparent layer on top
* set the layer mode of the new layer to darken only
* paint your colours on the new layer

this should give an effect like painting with water colour onto a pencil drawing.

* set the lay mode of the new layer to darken only

How do you set this?

Update:

Select the leftover shading by colour and continually increase the brightness under the colour menu until it turns it white. This will eliminate leftover shading.
