Just wondering how many distros people have tried. As well as the poll please list your distros in the format

distro liked/disliked

and how long you have been using linux.

I will start:

Fedora liked
ubuntu liked
debian liked
Opensuse disliked
PCBSD disliked
FreeNAS liked ( a lot)
Arch liked
Mandriva disliked
CentOS liked
Slackware liked
Opensolaris hated with a vengence

probably have tried others but can't really remember.

Have been using linux for about 7 years now.

EDIT: By tried I mean installed and fiddled with even if it was installed for under an hour. Live CD doesn't really count.

i have only used ubuntu and linux mint.
ubuntu- rocks
mint- eats my ram (only 256mb) disliked

have been using ubuntu for about a year, and am loving it.

If "tried" includes simply running a live cd (instead of installing the distro or virtualization), then 10+. I don't know for sure how many.

January 25th, 2010, 12:07 AM
I've only tried 3. If, however, kubuntu counts as a seperate distro to ubuntu, then it's 4. I just placed 3-4 =)

Ubuntu: liked (a lot)
Linux Mint: liked (lots of practical pre-installed repositories)
OpenSuse: disliked
Kubuntu: disliked

Installed at different times: 3 (Puppy, Red Hat & Ubuntu)
Used regularly: 1 (Ubuntu)

I've lost count of the amount I've tried over the last 5 years now. And to be quite honest I've actually got sick of "distro hopping" now at this stage.

i thought that tried meant the "use for some time" kind of "try" , so i voted for 5-6
(5 to be exact
ubuntu - still using it
open solaris - nothing i wanted there
pcbsd - PERFECT sound, clearer and louder than any other, yet needs too much attention in order to have it the way you want
linux mint - disliked
fedora - disliked

as for the "insert a live cd" kind of "try" eh... i have tried almost everything worth trying. but i can't say that that kind of trying gives any experience, it just satisfies the curiosity

Over the years, about 80 distros and I'm not joking. I always reinstall Slackware though.

and what do you mean by tried though? install it for one or two months or use it for a day?

Techsnap
January 25th, 2010, 12:24 AM
Some have been a few months, some have been a few hours (because they didn't work right with my hardware). Some I've used to see if they've improved since I last used them (Debian based distros, and I still don't like APT).

Run as installed systems for a month or more, in no particular order:

PCLinuxOS
Sam
Xubuntu
Ubuntu
Mandriva
Freespire
openSUSE
Mint
Debian
antiX
Open Solaris

Liked all of them, mostly use Mint now.

Installed for two days:

Arch

The fact that it only lasted two days tells it all.

I started my Linux journey with Fedora. I used that for quite a while and then went to Ubuntu for a while just to see what it was about and try something new. Since then i've tried out in no particular order Kubuntu, OpenSUSE, Xubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Gentoo, Arch, Crunchbang, PCLinuxOS, Mint, Mandriva, Sabayon, Chakra, and a few other randoms. I'm back on Fedora now though. Currently running Fedora 12 KDE.

Arch - liked and currently using

Liked:
Ubuntu (and kubuntu, xubuntu, crunchbang, fluxbuntu)
Debian
Mint
Suse/open suse
Cent os
Fedora 11/12
Slackware

Disliked:
Fedora 3 - buggy
Opensolaris - uses far too much memory
Xandros - too expensive, proprietary file manager whivch was not as good as the open source alternatives, cd writing restricted on the free version I used
Mandriva - lacked important tools forr laptops when I first tried, plus something dislikable that I could not put my finger on
Pc linux os - buggy
Gentoo - tried several times, never got working due to broken install and live cds.

I mentioned fedora in both and the versions because I changed my mind on fedora 11 - the difference was huge.

Over the last year that I have been using Linux OS's

Hardy Got me started Loved it
Intrepid Headaches Learned a lot
Jaunty Slick Well built Good Distro (should get LTS IMO)
Mint 7 Stacks up well as a ready to run OS Nice touches

I think that I am reaching the end line with this machine as it an OLD laptop

Fancy trying Arch next Just to really see how things work Or is that possibly not a great idea?:)

Serious use (at least 3/4 months as a main distro):

*buntu - Easiest to maintain and fairly current
Debian stable - Almost as easy as ubuntu but less current
Fedora - Current but worse performance and too many little problems

Other:

Arch - Too much effort to get running, then it died after a week or two and I cba to start over.
Gentoo - Install wasn't too hard but it took too long and I lost interest (IMHO compiling everything is premature optimisation, I might try sabyon one day though)
Opensuse - Never really got it working, everytime i fixed one issue, I found another so I gave up.

I put 5-6 but tbh i've only really used 4, I don't see the point in giving a distro anything less than a week as a primary distro before making my mind up about it.

I have over 100 .iso's floating around, but I've probably only given 20 a full blown test run. I've been using Linux for three or four years now.

EDIT: I'm gonna try to list them... this is also the order in which I've used distros.

Fedora, Sabayon, Ubuntu, Debian, gNewSense (I went through a phase), Zenwalk, Sidux, OpenSUSE, Slackware, Puppy, Frugalware, MEPIS, Gentoo, Arch... I've used more but can't really think of them... others were just offshoots of other distros, like CrunchBang and Elive.

Well, I spent a lot of time with the Knoppix live CD years ago, and I might have used that longer than some folks' hard drive installations have lasted, so yeah, live CDs can give you real Linux experience.

knoppix (use anywhere liveCD)

Here's a list of what I tried:

Ubuntu (4 versions) - liked

gOS - so/so. It had a crippled Ubiquity that forced you to use the entire disk to install. Version 2, I don't know about now.

Google Chrome OS - liked

Mint - liked

Gentoo - disliked: It only has a terminal, and is absolutely a PAIN to configure Wi-Fi in.

SLAX - liked

Linpus Lite: Absolutely LOATHED! It didn't have GCC or Make, and it also had an outdated repository (Fedora 8). Not to mention its insecurity: It logged you in automatically whether you liked it or not, and it also let you sudo without a password.

UNR - liked

Crunchbang: liked

Gentoo does have Xorg, you just have to install it and it also has network-manager, wicd, wpa_supplicant, etc you just have to install them too.

I counted Ubuntu variants as one. Besides those:

Puppy - running it on my 1999 Dell laptop

Slitaz - tried it, I liked Puppy better

Zenwalk - mouse was slow, flaky wireless

beastrace91

Not in any particular order:

Ubuntu
Fedora
Puppy
Linux Mint
Sabayon
CentOS
Sorcerer
Gobo Linux
Debian
Gentoo
OpenSUSE
Maemo
Open Solairis (Can I list this one?)

And several others I cannot recall at this current juncture... Ones that I would use are Ubuntu, Mint, or Sabayon on a desktop system. Fedora is great until you have to install something - then it typically leads to RPM hell I've found.

Been tinkering with *nix for about two and a half years now.

I started experimenting with Linux last March, and once I started, I couldn't stop! I've "distro-hopped" something like once a month since then! I have played around enough to learn that I prefer Debian and Debian-derived Linux.

In no particular order:

Debian Testing/Xfce - total awesomeness! My "home" distro.
Ubuntu - just okay
Kubuntu - verrrry slowwwww on my poor ol' 'puter
Xubuntu - rawks
Mint (Gnome) - pretty, but verrrry slowwww on my poor ol' 'puter
Crunchbang - stark minimal awesomeness, still a favorite
PCLinuxOS - pretty and simple, but had hardware issues
Slax - fun, fast, cool. Scary being logged in as root all the time though.
Masonux - minimal, very fast, Ubuntu-based, but LXDE is so maddeningly buggy on my system that I ran to Xfce, which I like.
U-Lite - same as Masonux, but slower and outdated
Mepis - rock-stable, Debian-Lenny-based KDE-4 beauty! Great for newbies.

Kubuntu - not bad
xubuntu - not as light as implied even by default
Mandriva - overall good but urmpi sucks
Fedora - trouble booting and with grub
opensuse - not updated enough
arch - excellent

I should add that apart from xubuntu all were KDE. After realising that I'd installed k9copy, K3B, amarok, kmess and audex on xubuntu I stuck with KDE

I've tried and liked... (in random order)

Masonux
puppy (currently installed on my dinosaur laptop)
tinycore
DSL and DSL-N
Debian
Mepis
Fedora (good but can't find propriety repos)
Ubuntu (All variants including the cli mini)
Mint (just the gnome)
CrunchBang (lite version)
Mandriva One (gnome and kde)
PClinuxOS (all variants)

I can't get the slackwares to install for some reason, (except zenwalk and vector, but they no longer run for me anyways) and Solaris and BSD's are too slow on my computer. I tried Arch too... Oh my goodness!!!

Linux Distro

Slackware - Always reliable
Red Hat - Who hasn't tried it?
Fedora - Good
Gentoo - Loved it years back, don't use it anymore
Debian - Served me well
*buntu - Ease, and quick testing
Arch - Didn't excite me
Sourcemage - Fantastic
Lunar - Simple, great implementation. Run an experimental SPARC port
Sorcerer -No.1 on my list. No nonsense distro
CRUX - Totally ace
LFS - No.2 on my list. DIY

*BSD
FreeBSD - Rock solid, powers one of my laptops, and main desk
NetBSD - Powers my SPARC machines
OpenBSD - Totally rocks, powers one of my laptops
DragonFlyBSD - One word - Hammer! Powers my EEE PC

OpenSolaris - Minimal works great for me. Use it for testing, and to get used to ZFS.

Ubuntu - for almost a year and was my first distro
Kubuntu - for a bit, I wasn't to keen, it looked like lego.

I'd like to expand my Linux knowledge and need something lightweight, Xfce based maybe.
I may try Crunchbang

For my main distro usage, I started out with Red Hat, then Fedora. Then I tried Ubuntu for a while to see what was so great about it. I realized the answer was "nothing" and went back to Fedora.

I have also kept up with Mandrake/Mandriva, which I like, but the releases tend to be hit or miss; OpenSuse, which is quite nice and what I usually recommend fro beginners; and Arch which I like a lot as well.

I have tried many others, but usually not long enough to form a fair opinion on them.

I have tried well over 10. There was a summer a few years ago where I tried every distro in the top 20 on distro watch... was good times.

Lately I have just stuck with Ubuntu, as I am far too busy to be doing that much distro hopping.
