Just wondering how many distros people have tried. As well as the poll please list your distros in the format

as for the "insert a live cd" kind of "try" eh... i have tried almost everything worth trying. but i can't say that that kind of trying gives any experience, it just satisfies the curiosity

Some have been a few months, some have been a few hours (because they didn't work right with my hardware). Some I've used to see if they've improved since I last used them (Debian based distros, and I still don't like APT).

I started my Linux journey with Fedora. I used that for quite a while and then went to Ubuntu for a while just to see what it was about and try something new. Since then i've tried out in no particular order Kubuntu, OpenSUSE, Xubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Gentoo, Arch, Crunchbang, PCLinuxOS, Mint, Mandriva, Sabayon, Chakra, and a few other randoms. I'm back on Fedora now though. Currently running Fedora 12 KDE.

Mandriva - lacked important tools forr laptops when I first tried, plus something dislikable that I could not put my finger on
Pc linux os - buggy
Gentoo - tried several times, never got working due to broken install and live cds.

I mentioned fedora in both and the versions because I changed my mind on fedora 11 - the difference was huge.

Jaunty Slick Well built Good Distro (should get LTS IMO)
Mint 7 Stacks up well as a ready to run OS Nice touches

Serious use (at least 3/4 months as a main distro):

*buntu - Easiest to maintain and fairly current
Debian stable - Almost as easy as ubuntu but less current
Fedora - Current but worse performance and too many little problems


Other:

Arch - Too much effort to get running, then it died after a week or two and I cba to start over.
Gentoo - Install wasn't too hard but it took too long and I lost interest (IMHO compiling everything is premature optimisation, I might try sabyon one day though)
Opensuse - Never really got it working, everytime i fixed one issue, I found another so I gave up.


I put 5-6 but tbh i've only really used 4, I don't see the point in giving a distro anything less than a week as a primary distro before making my mind up about it.

Well, I spent a lot of time with the Knoppix live CD years ago, and I might have used that longer than some folks' hard drive installations have lasted, so yeah, live CDs can give you real Linux experience.

gOS - so/so. It had a crippled Ubiquity that forced you to use the entire disk to install. Version 2, I don't know about now.

Google Chrome OS - liked

Mint - liked

Gentoo - disliked: It only has a terminal, and is absolutely a PAIN to configure Wi-Fi in.

SLAX - liked

Linpus Lite: Absolutely LOATHED! It didn't have GCC or Make, and it also had an outdated repository (Fedora 8). Not to mention its insecurity: It logged you in automatically whether you liked it or not, and it also let you sudo without a password.

Gentoo - disliked: It only has a terminal, and is absolutely a PAIN to configure Wi-Fi in.
Gentoo does have Xorg, you just have to install it and it also has network-manager, wicd, wpa_supplicant, etc you just have to install them too.

Puppy - running it on my 1999 Dell laptop

Slitaz - tried it, I liked Puppy better

Zenwalk - mouse was slow, flaky wireless

I started experimenting with Linux last March, and once I started, I couldn't stop! I've "distro-hopped" something like once a month since then! I have played around enough to learn that I prefer Debian and Debian-derived Linux.

In no particular order:

Debian Testing/Xfce - total awesomeness! My "home" distro.
Ubuntu - just okay
Kubuntu - verrrry slowwwww on my poor ol' 'puter
Xubuntu - rawks
Mint (Gnome) - pretty, but verrrry slowwww on my poor ol' 'puter
Crunchbang - stark minimal awesomeness, still a favorite
PCLinuxOS - pretty and simple, but had hardware issues
Slax - fun, fast, cool. Scary being logged in as root all the time though.
Masonux - minimal, very fast, Ubuntu-based, but LXDE is so maddeningly buggy on my system that I ran to Xfce, which I like.
U-Lite - same as Masonux, but slower and outdated
Mepis - rock-stable, Debian-Lenny-based KDE-4 beauty! Great for newbies.

OpenSolaris - Minimal works great for me. Use it for testing, and to get used to ZFS.

For my main distro usage, I started out with Red Hat, then Fedora. Then I tried Ubuntu for a while to see what was so great about it. I realized the answer was "nothing" and went back to Fedora.

I have also kept up with Mandrake/Mandriva, which I like, but the releases tend to be hit or miss; OpenSuse, which is quite nice and what I usually recommend fro beginners; and Arch which I like a lot as well.

I have tried many others, but usually not long enough to form a fair opinion on them.
