This is something I found recently and I now proudly use Ecosia instead of Google. Take a look at it and post what you think about it.

It's a collaboration between Bing, Yahoo and WWF.
It reminded me off Bing right away.

I know it is, does that make it a good or a bad thing for you?

Depends. To me, it does not matter really. But if you dislike MS its a bad thing.
But i have an eye on it. Never heard of it before.

I do indeed dislike MS, but what makes me choose it over Google is that it is eco-friendly and that you can do your bit for the climate without having any disadvantages.

I wouldn't be caught dead with Bing. Considering I switched from SkyDrive to Ubuntu One, I won't go back.

Google all along. At least they open source their software ('http://code.google.com/hosting/projects.html'). Microsoft does open source a very small portion of it (only Silverlight), but Google, if you look under letters A and C of the Projects directory, you'll find an entire browser - and 2 operating systems.

I turned it off when he said something about one search using the same power as powering a light for an hour.

There was some posts about this a while ago, turns out the power used for each search is insignificantly small.

lol they dog bing and yahoo in the beginning and then turn around say they're the main contributers to ecosia...
Now what would actually be productive would be to make those german style solar houses/warehouses that produce more energy than they use, and house the servers in it.

To be quite honest I don't really care whether they publish source code or not, I believe that the climate aspect has more priority than those narrow-minded issues. But that's my opinion, not trying to offend anybody.

Again, you're not saving any environment by not using Google.

Hi,
Thanks for the link. I'm trying it out now, and I am liking the results I get for each search. I don't understand the "more searches" button on http://ecosia.org/ though. Those linked searches are still not eco friendly searches, right? or have the ads been converted somehow? If not, why are they linking to them?

This is what interests me about ecosia

Some search engines store your searches for many months and analyze them to create a profile of you. Ecosia in contrast deletes all user-related data within a maximum of 48 hours in order to protect your privacy. For more information please check our privacy policy (http://ecosia.org/about.php).

Also, Google's open source projects are just fun little side projects funded with spare change. Google has no noticeable obligation toward Open Source.

Just because google isn't outright pro-open source, I'm failing to see the problem with them donating to FOSS projects. Note, I'm not saying that's what anyone is implying, but there's really no sense in looking the gift horse in the mouth.

Saying Google is great for being Open Source and then neglecting and scolding Microsoft's commitments towards Open Source is a double standard.

I don't like microsoft but I won't think twice about taking their funds. I understand your point but business is business.

You're not saving the environment by not using Google, but you're saving the environment by using search engines like Ecosia.
The fact that you stop supporting American capitalists that store all your information for ages and annoy you with their ads on thousands of web pages is also quite a nice argument for me. ;)

The alternative search options are not eco-friendly, but for certain things like pictures you need them, and that way you don't need to change to another website in order to use them.
You can also use those searches by simply typing the name of it with two colons and behind it your search term (e.g. "youtube::Juggling Scotland" is going to lead you directly to the search results for "Juggling Scotland" on Youtube).
