I'm thinking of getting the Canon Ixus 100IS. i heard its pretty decent and better than the others in its price category. question though, considering the fact that i wont be able to run the default canon software (which most probably runs on Windows), are there any viable alternative softwares for linux for canon cameras?

My point and shoot is the Canon SD870 IS (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SD870IS-Digital-Stabilized/dp/B000V1XICU) and I've never installed the Canon software in Windows. All I'll be doing is exporting the images to Lightroom for editing anyway. In Ubuntu it's recognized by default and I export to Gimp for light editing.

I just switch the camera over to "Detect as Filesystem" or whatever the setting is in the cameras nowadays instead, because I never, ever use photo management software. Why use it?

This.

Windows is smart enough now, to recognize a digicam for what it is and ask what to do.

The GIMP is not a photo management application, F-Spot is.

All cameras are pretty much of a muchness within their categories. The biggest arbiter in the image quality of a camera is the person using it. Don't pay too much attention to reviews, most are sponsored by major camera manufacturers.

You don't need the canon software to take the pictures off the camera or process them. Linux will detect the camera as a mass storage device and import through fspot or digikam or whatever you want to use to process. If push comes to shove, use an SD card reader.

some cameras will have video features and claim to be youtube ready, be very careful in choosing a model for anything other than still shots !

some models will have excellent video quality but lack a microphone, what's a video without sound ?

Get the Canon you talked about in your first post. You won't be disappointed. Regarding video, the IS is for stabilization and they've done a stellar job with its implementation.

I have a Canon as well and it is detected automatically and f-spot offers to import all the images. Mine is the SD 790 IS.

Don't pay too much attention to reviews, most are sponsored by major camera manufacturers.I do not believe that's true of sites like Digital Photography Review (http://www.dpreview.com/) or Steve's Digicams (http://www.steves-digicams.com/). But one does have to check the reviews carefully, and not just take the summaries as Gospel.

You don't need the canon software to take the pictures off the camera or process them. Linux will detect the camera as a mass storage device and import through fspot or digikam or whatever you want to use to process.Something must have changed, then. Used to be that wouldn't work. I had tried it with a couple different Canon digicams, one a pocket point-and-shoot, the other one of their higher-end SLR's, as recently as 3-4 years ago, and neither Linux nor 'doze would see a USB filesystem. That's one reason I crossed Canon off my list when shopping for a digicam a number of years ago.

If Canon's really can be seen as USB filesystems, now, you don't need photo management software to fetch the pictures off them. You'll be able to open the camera up in Nautilus, or even just use common command-line utilities.

If push comes to shove, use an SD card reader. That's the way one used to have to do it with Canon digicams. Many photogs always do it that way, anyway, to avoid running-down their camera batteries whilst moving things to their computer and deleting them off the camera's memory. I understand that's also a far faster way to do it.

If I were going to look for a photo managing app today I'd probably start with shotwell. It's pretty impressive.

I still use my older SD400. All the time i want it to buy a new one but since i do not shot a lot, it was kinda pointless.
But i think i would go with one which can record in RAW. Plus very high iso speed so you can take a least good night photos. Thats where these cameras suck.
Camera's today are so small that even the higher quality ones are small enough to carry around.
I used to have a G3 which was cool. Sold it. was a mistake. :(
But i have always a problem with importing. I get always told, once i connect the camera, that i have to unmount it (wth).

Your Elph looks nice. And its the same price i paid for mine long ago. Amazing. :)

I actually use it. I like it too.
But i had to report a bug. If i import pictures it crashes. :(
still the most lightwave and quick app i have seen so far. +1

DPreview is owned by a major corporation. The only major photography review site that isnt owned by Da Man, is Ken Rockwells site, but he's a buffoon.

/whisper this: all cameras are the same image quality at low iso's. everything else is fluff and marketing bumph.

I know from personal experience, even my amateurish personal experience, that's patently false.
