Ubuntu flashing terminal screen on login

Just installed Ubuntu 9.10 side by side with XP. When trying to run ubuntu from Grub the terminal screen opens but then starts to flash. This makes it difficult to type and login. When I do eventually login it just goes no further than a terminal prompt. If I use recovery mode the screen does not flash but still cannot get to the desktop.:confused:Help please:confused:

We need to know your hardware to go any further with this, particularly your graphics card, I suspect, which is the most likely cause of the problem.

Thanks, Dell Laptop with NVidia Go FX5200 graphics. Installed from a USB stick which I have been using to trial Ubuntu.
