WOW thats a lot of addons. doesnt it slow down FF?

Not at all. Firefox takes 5 seconds to load here and performance is great. But that doesn't mean you can install any add-ons you want and get the same performance. Several extensions perform functions on startup/shutdown, if those functions write/read from sqlite databases and the databases are not optimized, then it can increase startup time considerably. Additionally, some extensions can reduce overall performance too.

For instance, Xmarks is one extension I don't use anymore, because it performs a lot of database reading to merge bookmarks and slows down Firefox considerably. At least last time I used it.

One thing that helps is to never start Firefox with a sidebar opened. For instance I use All-in-One Sidbar and force the Add-ons manager to open in the sidebar. If I start Firefox with the Add-ons manager opened, it takes a couple of extra seconds to load.

Database optimization helps a lot to keep it running smoothly, since several add-ons and browser functions needs to write/read from databases. For example, if you have tons of bookmarks like I do and don't optimize the bookmark database, then typing anything in the address bar can be very slow.

Take a look at my tutorial Firefox optimization and troubleshooting thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1193567). It has several tips on how to keep Firefox flying smoothly.

Hey LovingLinux,

You seem like the person to ask some of my FF-related questions:

1) What does Ghostery do that NoScript and fine-tuned Cookie settings don't?
2) Also, how is it that I need to install this Strata and Strata buddy stuff to move my tab-bar to the top? It must be possible without an extension!

lovinglinux
January 26th, 2010, 12:41 AM
1) What does Ghostery do that NoScript and fine-tuned Cookie settings don't?

Depends how you configure NoScript/Cookies and how the third-party site tracks you down. For instance, when I visit https://addons.mozilla.org there is a tracking service called Omniture that is not detected by NoScript, but it is detected by Ghostery, probably because it doesn't use any script or because the script itself is generated by Mozilla, which I allow on NoScript.

I also used to block all cookies and allowed just the ones I needed, but recently I'm allowing everything and deleting cookies after Firefox shutdown. So, with Ghostery, I'm sure I won't receive any tracking cookie, even allowing all of them.

So using Ghostery with other tools like NoScript allows me to use a more flexible combination of settings.

2) Also, how is it that I need to install this Strata and Strata buddy stuff to move my tab-bar to the top? It must be possible without an extension!

You do it by tweaking the /chrome/userChrome.css inside your Firefox profile, but it's easier to just install Stylish (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108) extension and load this script (http://userstyles.org/styles/10750).

Here's mine from Vista where I'm logged in at the moment, but my Linux ones are set up the same.

The forum is beige due to a script saved in the ZapBright link which removes white backgrounds and stops my eyestrain migraines.

I have the URL box on the left and the nav buttons on the right, contrary to the rest of the world it seems! Why? Because I find that my mouse pointer usually lives on the right side of the screen by scroll bars, more recent items on the taskbar and window close buttons, so I find it more natural to use buttons on that side of the screen :)

Okay, here's another question: If you are deleting all cookies when Firefox closes, do you really need to block any? They can't really track you unless you never close Firefox.
