View Full Version : [ubuntu] Google Earth freezes Karmic

Running Google Earth 5.1 beta on Karmic (irrespective if gnome or kde) locks up my system after a brief but fully functional uptime of anywhere between 3 seconds to 3 minutes. This behavior is repeatable & predictable; it started directly after upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic (no problems with Jaunty). Strangely, the freeze state of my system has recently changed frome a complete freeze to an unresponsive desktop (i.e. mouse still works, but nothing else: no caps lock light, no zapping X with ctrl+alt+backspace, although reboot possible with SysRq key combos).

I'm running:

kernel: 2.6.31-17
Xorg X server: 1.6.4
Gnome: 2.28.1
CPU: Intel 1.5 GHz
graphics: Intel 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device
graphics driver: i915

Does anyone have a suggestion how to further troubleshoot freeze behavior like that?

I realize there're threads out there addressing similar problems with Google Earth and other opengl apps, but none offer a solution to my problem, so I'm asking the greater forum for help on this bug.

Any help is enormously appreciated!

cheers
