What format do you usually save files as?
text files- no extension
images- .png
audio- .mp3 (set to a high bitrate if I made it)
archives- .zip, .cab, or .7z depending on what it's for
disk image- .iso
video- .flv

While I use plenty of other file types, these are the only mediums where I ever really have to save and choose a format.

I save (almost) everything for maximum portability.
Please consider doing likewise, fellas! There's nothing more annoying than swapping files with others and discovering that they don't open as they should. (and I think you agree)

text files - no extension if I make them for myself only. I only write the .txt if I'm gonna share them

images - jpeg; they can be read on any device which actually reads pictures
- png if I need transparency/high quality, which I usually don't

audio - mp3; no justification needed (but I'm fond of ogg)

archives - The symbol of portability: ZIP, tar.gz and 7z rarely and Rar when I need to split the archive into volumes

documents - OpenOffice.org format so I convince people to use it instead of Ms Office, but I usually end up resending them as .doc/xls etc :)
- pdf any time when no modifications are needed

If you're compressing something use .rar. zip sucks and compresses to about 1/3 the volume whereas .rar will compress to around 1/8 and is also multiplatform.

You need to install additional software to get RAR to work - on Windows AND on Linux.
Zips... you can open them Everywhere with no effort. ;)

If I care a lot about the size, then it's RAR/7z, of course.

Same as you but for text and archives. Most text files just get .txt plopped after them so when I open em in Windows it doesn't get confused ;) Archives that are gonna be distributed to people or opened in Windows are .rar and for everything else, .tar.gz :)
