I am brand new to ubuntu. I wish to install vlc player on version 9.10. It appears on every ubuntu site that all I can download is the windows version. Where do you guiys get your ubuntu version.

Don't get it from VLC website.
It's in Ubuntu's repository (after you have enabled 'multiverse').
To enable multiverse do this:-
System > Administration > Software Sources
Then tick the 'multiverse' box.

Then use these instructions from VLC website:-

Graphical way

Open Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager). In Settings -> Repositories, make sure you have a "multiverse" repository activated.

Search for vlc and install it. You should also install vlc-plugin-pulse, mozilla-plugin-vlc (and libdvdcss2).

If you are interrested in streaming or transcoding, you should also install libavcodec-extra-52.

It may be worth giving the following page a read. It just explains about installing software on Ubuntu. The rest of that site is also a good introduction for new users.
