I've read a few threads about linux books and went to my local book store but I'm not finding what I want. It seems like many of the books I found were about installing and setting up a particular distribution and often seemed overly simple. I don't want a book that walks me through setting up a linux distro. I can do that. What I'd like is something that teaches me more about how linux works and how to tweak it, all the various commands and how to use them, and doing things like compiling a kernel.

Any thoughts?

I highly recommend Running Linux by O'Reilly Press (one of many great books they have published)

Wow! Thanks for all the suggestions. I saw the dummies books but they were for Suse. I don't recall one on linux in general.

Sounds like O'Rielly books are popular. I will check them out.

Thanks.

Thank you. I actually saw these books at the book store but didn't really look through them. I'll pay more attention next time.
