I replaced a dying hard drive in a dell D600 laptop that's 4 or 5 years old. The installation of 9.10 appears to complete fine. I reboot after install, login and then attempt to run update manager. At this point the machine seems to freeze up. I uploaded a photo of the screen to flickr...

Any help appreciated?

I have a couple of those laptops and the only problem has been lack of ram.
If under 512 then problems seem to arise.

I'm fairly certain there's at least a GB, likely 2 GB, in that laptop. It was previously running ubuntu, just not 9.10.

I have the same problem (system freezes when starting anything) with my Dell latitude D600 laptop (512 MB memory). I used the
" ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso"-image. Should I use the "ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso" image instead?
