Problems with PS3? [Archive]

So my boyfriend has been trying to put Linux on his PS3, but unfortunately his disc drive is messed up and won't read discs. I've been looking online for a good hour or so to see if there's a way to install it without a disc, straight from a USB drive, but have not found anything useful.

Is it even possible? Or am I wasting my time? Because he would really love to be able to use his PS3 again, but haven't been able to find a way to make this work.

Any help would be appreciated, even if it's just to tell me it's not possible and I'm wasting my time. ^_^

I looked through it, but it only has instructions for Windows or Linux. How would I get that on his PS3?
