My Compaq Presario B1800 is running 9.10, and the volume for the speakers is fine. When I plug in my earphones, I think the soundcard supplies the same power to the earphones which is OK quiestest of the quiestest settings, but waay to loud even on the second notch.

Any help with this?

Hi,

You can check your settings in system - preferences - sound or from the terminal:

alsamixer

you can set the volume with arrow up and down or mute/unmute with the 'm' key.

Hope this will help.

I've turned the volume down to the lowest as I said in my OP, its still quite loud though.

two ways to set the sound volume
one is hardware and other is software

on laptops some have a hardware volume control

good luck and have fun learning
