View Full Version : [ubuntu] Ubuntu 9.10 Stalls on Bootup

Hello,

I am a code ignorant Ubuntu newb that has been using ubuntu for about a year. I have been able to solve any issue prior to this with simple web searches but I cannot find any solution to my current problem. Ubuntu would boot fine untill I upgraded to 9.10. Initially it would load up to the logo prior to the flash screen and just stall. It would boot up after a few reboots. Now it gets stuck at the logo screen a refuses to boot up. I can't find a similar problem anywhere on the web. If there is and the problem has been solved, please refer me to the url. Otherwise, any ideas? Agian I have tried virtually every other solution. Also, I have not been able to exactly match my problem with others. Booting into recovery mode yields the 'filesystem failed to mount' response.

UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY: RUN fsck MANUALLY.

I have performed this operation with no avail.

fsck yields:

/dev/sda1 contains a file system with errors, check forced.

Mind you that none of this occured prior to Ubuntu 9.10. Also, XP boots fine on the same macine with a different hard drive. Ideas?

Also, sometimes the graphic is messed up when it stalls.

It sounds like either something may have corrupted your hard drive or it is failing. Corrupted graphics, stalls, and failed fsck do not sound promising.

Back up anything you have not already backed up, and check it with the WD diagnostic utility from http://www.wdc.com/ which you will need if it is covered under warranty.

This all started with the upgrade to Karmic Koala. I have run the disk check and it came back as being fine. Could it be in the partition size? I have it set as the entire disk. What is the proper partition size for Ubuntu v9.10? Why does it fail to load only occasionally? I can read the data from the windows partition. I really don't think the disk is corrupted. The flash screen seems to have given others some problems booting. I think that is what is causing the malfunction...

Did you do a dist-upgrade or a clean install of 9.10?

While you are at it we need to see more specific info about your setup and boot process. Let's get a better look at your setup & boot process. Boot the Ubuntu Live CD/USB. Choose "try ubuntu without any changes", when the desktop loads come back here and use the link in my signature to download the Boot Info Script to the desktop. Once on desktop open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and run this command
sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh This will create a RESULTS.txt file on the desktop. Paste the entire contents of that file back here. Once pasted highlight all text and click the # sign on the toolbar to place code tags around the text.

Thank you for the response. I tried the above proceedure and command but it yielded the 'no such file or directory' response. Am I doing something wrong?

It finally decided to boot up after running the disk check utility. This is why this error is so unusual because it is selective if it boots up or does not. Again, it stalls immediately prior to the flash screen and that is what is new to 9.10. The error did not occur prior to the 9.10 dist-upgrade from 9.4. Is there anyway to disable the flash intro? Any insights would be useful.

Thanks again.

I'd like to add that I to am experiencing this exact same problem. I just did a sudo apt-get update about an hour ago. When I rebooted I get the same error. Something went wrong with the most recent upgrade.
Everything worked great as per my last post earlier today.(prior to the upgrade)

After you downloaded the boot info script did you move it to the desktop? Then run that command from terminal!

Your sdc, sdd & sde disks are jacked up and unmountable! What is on them?

But we can probably get your 9.10 Ubuntu working. You will need the 9.04 (not 9.10) Live CD because you still have Legacy GRUB 0.97. Boot the 9.04 Live CD. Choose "try Ubuntu without any changes", when the desktop loads open a terminal and do this:

1. Boot your computer up with Ubuntu CD
2. Open a terminal window or switch to a tty.
3. Type sudo grub. Should get text of which last line is grub>
4. Type "find /boot/grub/stage1". You'll get a response like "(hd1,0)".
Use whatever your computer spits out for the following lines.
5. Type "root (hd1,0)"
6. Type "setup (hd1)", to install GRUB to MBR
7. Quit grub by typing "quit".
8. Reboot and remove the bootable CD.

Reboot & go into BIOS. Set the sdb disk (34 GB) as first hard disk to boot in the hard disk boot order. Save changes to CMOS & continue booting into Ubuntu.

Open a terminal and run
gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
That is a lowercase L in .lst

Scroll down to this:

I have a few programs and some videos I been working on.
I realize when my 34g drive starts to get full, I transfer them to the 500g.(sometimes not fast enough)
I think overloading this drive is what caused my problems to start the time before I tried karmic. Things deteriorated quickly from there.
I'll give this a try. Thanks for your help. If all else fails, I'm prepared to do a clean install. I think...:P

After some more rebooting drama, here's mine. If it is the same as above, just say same. Otherwise, what do I do?

All it did was open a blank page.

Any ideas?

I have a few programs and some videos I been working on.
I realize when my 34g drive starts to get full, I transfer them to the 500g.(sometimes not fast enough)
I think overloading this drive is what caused my problems to start the time before I tried karmic. Things deteriorated quickly from there.
I'll give this a try. Thanks for your help. If all else fails, I'm prepared to do a clean install. I think...:P

My drive is also almost full. Even when it was mostly empty, the same error occurred. From my vantage point, it was something in the 9.10 upgrade that caused the malfunction.

Your output from the script looks good to me. I really don't like the option where you have the choice of keeping legacy GRUB. In my opinion that is a mistake in most cases. Off the top of my head I can't remember the procedure to put GRUB2 in it's place. After my daughter is asleep I will look that up.

It booted up on the first time today but had no sound then it stalled again. I tried starting it in recovery mode but it yielded

Bug: soft lockup - CPU#6 stuck for 61s! [modprobe:795]

Now I am trying to boot from the live CD and spit out some error about the audio. Now it won't boot from the live CD and I get the error message:

Bug: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 61s! [modprobe:1572]

I built my own system and had manually ensable ALSA because I am using a Creative sound card. Could this be the cause of the error? I am at a loss here...

Installing Grub2 solved it when I removed the sound card. After reinstalling the sound card, it stalls. There must be some interaction with the boot sequence and the sound card with ALSA enabled. Any ideas?

Or maybe my computer has been hacked by some unscrupulous peeping toms...

I can't even get 9.10 32 bit or 64 bit to install it hangs up just as described above. When I put a live disc in it gets almost to the desktop and stops. No trouble with 9.04.

I have just downloaded and installed ubuntu 9.10. This is a fresh install. In fact I started over at least once and went so far as to run fixmbr on the Windows harddisk (the primary IDE drive), so there is no question about grub versus grub2. The Live CD boots just fine and the install works. After the install the machine sits in bootloader for a full ten minutes (I used a stopwatch several times to be sure). I repartition and format each partition during the install, so there is no good reason for there to be a file system problem. The grub menu does show up (after 10 minutes) and it works. So far in this thread the closest I come to an explanation might be the splash image, if there is one in the grub chain. Otherwise, it is the same problem but no good explanation. One other quirk in my system is the primary drive is IDE, but the drive I am installing Ubuntu on is a SATA hard drive on the second SATA chain, and the first SATA chain is occupied by a DVD burner.

I did, in an earlier life of this machine, have Debian installed. Grub worked just fine in this configuration.

Let's get a better look at your setup & boot process. Boot into Ubuntu. Come back here and use the link in my signature to download the Boot Info Script to the desktop.

Hi guys
I've just attempted to install 9.04 on a separate drive (sdb1) to XP.
Boot stops with an Error 17
I've attempted to fix grub with Super Grub disk with no luck.

My boot info results:

=> Grub 0.97 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on boot drive #2
in partition #1 for /boot/grub/stage2 and /boot/grub/menu.lst.
=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb
=> No known boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdc

Since the previous post,I reinstalled 9.04 on sdb1, but this time I installed Grub on sdb instead of sda.
I now get the Grub boot menu with the correct options and can boot Ubuntu 9.04
If I select Windows XP I get "Error 13 invalid or unsupported format".

Any ideas how to fix this?

Boot into Ubuntu. Open a terminal and run
gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
That is a lowercase L in .lst

When the file opens scroll down to this:

# This entry automatically added by the Debian installer for a non-linux OS
# on /dev/sda1
title Windows NT/2000/XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1

Change it to:

# This entry automatically added by the Debian installer for a non-linux OS
# on /dev/sda1
title Windows NT/2000/XP
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
chainloader +1

You can edit the title line to reflect your version of windows ( title Windows XP Professional, for example)

Click Save on top toolbar and close file. Reboot & try booting windows.

Thanks for the reply,
I will keep it for future reference.

I managed to get XP up and running.
I reinstalled 9.04 for a 3rd time, this time installing the bootloader to sda1 (where I think XP is installed).
The first installation attempt had the default location for the bootloader as hd0.The second installation attempt I put the bootloader in sdb.
Then I selected sda as the 1st drive to boot after CDROM.

I also selected sdb as 2nd hd to boot, but I think this is irrelevant.

Now when I boot up I get the grub menu with:
Ubuntu
Ubuntu recovery
Memtest
Other OS:
XP

If I select Ubuntu it boots straight to 9.04
If I select XP I get another Grub menu wich is exactly the same as the WUBI install I thought I deleted, with 2 choices:
ubuntu
XP

If I select XP windows boots successfully.
If I select Ubuntu the boot hangs.

I would like to remove the 2nd (non-functioning) Ubuntu option, any suggestions where I would find this?

Perhaps there is a residual grub from WUBI?
I deleted all the files on the partition WUBI was installed to (different partition to Windows) as I could not use the uninstaller for WUBI.It was not there for some reason.

Thanks for the help.
I will post an updated boot info results file.

You can get rid of the wubi entry in boot.ini.

Go Control Panel > System > Advanced > and one of those buttons there (I believe startup & recovery) will have an Edit button. If you click Edit it will open boot.ini in notepad. Remove the reference to wubi. Be careful to only remove wubi's reference. This will get rid of the ubuntu entry when choose windows from GRUB. When boot.ini takes over it will go straight to windows.

Cool! That worked fine.
I don't get the 2nd OS options menu now.

I've attached the latest Boot Info output in case it has useful info for you.

Glad you got it working! Enjoy Ubuntu.

The reason you got that ubuntu entry when you chose windows is you had a prior install of wubi. Wubi boots from the windows bootloader (in XP- boot.ini). So when you booted your machine windows bootloader took over giving you the two options. When you chose Ubuntu it passed off to GRUB and presented the GRUB menu. Now even though you removed wubi that entry in boot.ini remains until you edit it. Uninstalling wubi does not edit boot.ini.

You now have GRUB on MBR. When you choose windows from the GRUB menu it passes off to boot.ini. So whatever is in boot.ini will presented as a choice at that point.

I had the WUBI install for over a year and a dual boot of 7.10 prior to that.
I could be considered a convert.:D

I've been also having similar problems with Ubuntu 9.10 stalling on me. I am not sure if it's exactly the same problem as everyone else because it eventually boots after about 1 minute or so but it's just frustrating having to wait since that's never happened before. The stalling always happens right before the logon screen appears.

I've also got Vista installed on the my HD on a different partition.

I ran the script that you've mentioned and the results are below.
