Hi, I have been looking on these forums to get some help with my broken package warning. Often, when i try to install something, it says that i have a broken package. Ive run the synaptic thing and that thing that you can do with the terminal, but it still says something is broken. Can i get some help?

Umm, I don't see anything wrong apart from that you have some packages that aren't being used anymore and can be removed with

sudo apt-get autoremove

...But i still have some broken package somewhere.

What makes you think that? Exactly where is the system telling you that you have a broken package? In the Upgrade Manager?

System>Administration>Hardware drivers. I have not yet activated the driver on that. I try to activate that, and heres what it says:
SystemError: E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

also, when i try to install things from the synaptic software thing, it says that it cant due to broken packages.

OH< S**T!!!
aparently, i deleted the Ubuntu Desktop. Im guessing thats REALLY important. i think that may be why it all got messed up. So i tried to reinstall it, and wadia know? it has about 100 dependants. And none of them will download because i dont have the Ubuntu Desktop.

...
is there a way to just reset the entire thing to go back to when i first started ubuntu?

or an easy way to reinstall?

Can't say I've ever really been much for finding humor in others' misfortunes.

What way did you try to reinstall the ubuntu-desktop package? Post the output of

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

The desktop is responsable for all downloads, so nothing could be done. How do you uninstall Ubuntu? Ill be reinsalling it

Ack. That's not good. No need to uninstall, just make sure you overwrite the existing partitions when you go to reinstall.

Hi
I am not so sure I know the right protocol about making a rude interruption in a conversation - so please excuse me.
I am using Ubuntu Karmic in my desktop and Jaunty in my Laptop. Recently I am unable to update my Karmic - update manager gets stuck on Building dependency. I was reading this thread and took a cue and did sudo apt-get install -f
It says:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
Please tell me what I can do now?
Thanks

Hi

What you're referring to is impolitely called thread-hijacking.

Please begin a new thread with a title that adequately describes your problem(s) so that others can direct their advice to your particular issue.
