if i upgrate my ubuntu 9.04 version to 9.10 will i use my files etc ??
what should i do in that case?

always back up your files when upgrading, partiioning or installing an OS. You should back up your files on a regular basis anyway because if your hard drive fails you most likely may not be able to retrieve the files.

I prefer clean installs to an in place dist-upgrade.

If you upgrade using the upgrade manager, you shouldn't lose anything.
If you re-install, you will lose everything on the partitions that get re-formatted during that process



what should i do in that case?

Backup anything you can't afford to lose before you start, no matter what you do. ;)
