I just don't understand.
What is going on? Is my /var/log/messages file don't work any more, beginning from that messages (rsyslogd was HUPed) ?

I'm having the same problem. All messages in archive show the same thing, which dates back to December ~21st.

Mine - Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server 64bit - Same messages in /var/log/messages:

Oct 15 06:30:51 integre rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="4.2.0" x-pid="16423" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] rsyslogd was HUPed, type 'lightweight'.

Not sure why this is happening.

Hey guys,

Are there work-arounds to this? Rsyslogd could be replaced by something else correct?

Has anyone tried a different logger?

I also get this message and it causes all my harddisks in the server to spinup once a day, which is really bad..

I have 6 hardisks in my fileserver and there is only data on it, no system or logfiles..

What is the reason for the drive spinup?

Can i deactivate rsyslog somehow or get it to be HUPed only once a week?

Hi all,

I am using UBUNTU 10.04 LTS in a 64 bit machine, and the same rsyslog message: rsyslogd was HUPed, type 'lightweight' (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1384521) came a few days a go and no more syslog, messages or other log was generated.
Also all cron jobs did not complete, they freezed. And as i could not execute top, nor ps i could not check if the jobs were still alive.
As stated in load summary when logging in, CPU% raised continuously since this message started, and a few days after CPU load was already at 90%.

Do you think my problem may be related to this thread?

Thanks!!!

It might be coincidental but I found that many of my /var/log/ files have been deleted during a remote compromise - Ubuntu 11.04 amd64 - 2.6.38-8.

What does it mean? A year and a half since this question was asked, and NO ONE has been able to provide an answer? This is giving me an internal server error and stopping a Drupal instance from loading. http://www.ScoutFishing.com I could use the help.

I have got the same problem. I am not sure if it is VM related but all mine are on VMs. They are all Ubuntu-10.04.xxLTS. The problem is there is no /dev/xconsole device. So I create one in rc.local and again I check to see it it there on a start and restart of the rsyslog daemon.

Look in your /var/log/syslog
You will find:
rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="4.2.0" x-pid="549" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] (re)start
rsyslogd: rsyslogd's groupid changed to 103
rsyslogd: rsyslogd's userid changed to 101
rsyslogd-2039: Could no open output file '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ]

----------------------
FILE=/dev/xconsole

if [ -e $FILE ]; then
echo "$FILE exists Carry on!"
else
mknod -m 640 /dev/xconsole c 1 3
chown syslog:adm /dev/xconsole
echo "Created $FILE."
fi
--------------------
I have asked support for help on this to get this resolved but no word yet. Hope this helps you or any one else having this bug.

I had this problem, or should I say two problems. First the message rsyslogd was HUPed, type 'lightweight' was turning up in my logs. And then there was no other messages in my syslog file. So I thought that the HUPed messages where the problem.

This is not the case, the HUPed messages occur when the rsyslog daemon gets re-initialised. Quote the man page for rsyslogd: "HUP This lets rsyslogd perform a re-initialization". And the daemon will be re-initialised whenever the syslog is rotated.

And the not logging problem for me was casued by a config problem. When I did a release upgrade the time before last, the syslog was replaced with rsyslog and in doing so the conf file /etc/syslog.conf was copied to /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf. This was not a problem at the time but when I did another release upgrade /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf.ucf-dist was created as I had a modified config file. This second config file caused the problem with rsyslog not logging. I just deleted it and it all worked.

Lesson learned: read all the upgrade logs...
