I'm an AS level computing student in England learning Visual Basic in a windows environment. I've had a scout about as I wish to be able to develop programs for linux too.

Gambas uses Basic and I've had a bit of a play and I've managed to get some stuff working. My main worry is that GAMBAS isn't commonly used and could hence cause problems when distributing my problems.

If this is so, what other routes could I go down?

Forget Gambas, learn Python.

Never looked at Python. Is it relatively easy to pick up?

Yes, thats why most people recommend it. The documentation is excellent as well.

Okay then, thanks. I'll take a look at it. Is Aptana Studio an ok IDE to use? I just noticed a Python plugin for it...

For learning, you might be best sticking with the interpreter for simple one or two line commands, and a text editor for the longer scripts.
