Hey folks,

Linux Journal (http://www.linuxjournal.com) editor Shawn Powers (http://www.brainofshawn.com) was Sunday a victim of fire at his house in Indian River, Michigan.

His family is alright; they were out of the house for church in the morning. However, their pets and those pets in their care are gone. The house is still standing, but there's not word yet if it will be a total loss. It seems that most of their possessions are unrecoverable.

You may know Shawn from his LJ tech tips, a few of which have had some discussion on this forum.

If you can provide anything -- toys for his daughters, computer/gadgets for him, anything for his wife, or money for the family -- please help out.

There's a ChipIn going on: http://helpshawnpowersfamily.chipin.com/help-shawn-powers-family.

Linux Journal is forwarding stuff to him, as well: http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/urgent-help-shawn-powers-family

Let's show Shawn and his family that the Ubuntu community cares and appreciates his contributions to the furtherance of Linux and open source software. Ubuntu does mean "humanity to man," so let's come together in support of this great person.

Sorry to hear that. It's good they are all ok though.

Did someone leave something switched on ?

If you read the article...you would have seen that he did the blog from work. He still needs to go to work.

Surely he has insurance that'll pay for the loss?

Try reading the linked article.

ETA: I sent him what cash I could. Losing your house and all your pets like that has got to be devastating.

It doesn't say anything about if he had insurance or not?

Second link in the OP. But since you're apparently having a lot of difficulty with that, yes he does have insurance. But insurance isn't a magic wand.

Insurance will pay for the good he lost, but no matter what anyone gives him, it won't replace the pets. That's what I don't get.

He does.

* The insurance company wasn’t reachable today. While I’m not sure if they’ll consider the house a complete loss, or will requisition to have it fixed, rest assured we do have insurance.

I've chipped in. Sounds like going to Church was a bad investment for him though, maybe he should stop doing that.

How about we not talk something that could get this thread closed? This thread really needs to stay open.

Here is the unofficial..

* Our house did burn, but is still standing. The fireman said it was likely because it’s winter, and the house was sealed up, so there wasn’t enough oxygen to keep the flames going. The part of the house where the main electrical line comes in is completely burned away, you can look down into the crawlspace from the bedroom door. While not official, the firemen think the main line in the crawl space is what caused the fire.

Man thats harsh. :( My thoughts go out to Shawn powers and family. I wish I had some extra funds to send his way right now but can't. What I will do is renew my subscription to LJ when it comes up later in the year. Supplying the magazine that supplies him is still helping a little.. Its a great zine, btw.
