Being a non native English speaker I'd like to know what it means if someone responds only with "this". I've seen this a couple of times but don't understand the meaning of it.

I'd say it's like "I agree with what the user above said".

In a few cases I have seen "this" to refer to a link that may follow the word.
+1 to the other reason mentioned. +1 = I agree but you probably already know that/this :)

It's so people that have nothing useful to say (but have to say something) can agree with a previous post.
