So I was just searching around the internet for a Windows 2000 key just to try it in VirtualBox.

So then I stumbled upon this (https://www.dreamspark.com/Default.aspx). And a few questions about it, first it looks legit to me, does it seem sketchy to anyone else?

And my next question has anyone used Windows Server 2008, because I was going to give it a whirl if it is for free? Would it be okay to use it as a desktop OS?

i have a windows 2008r2 active directory setup at home, one physical machine and one VM. my main domain controller is also my main fileshare box. overall, i REALLY like win2k8, but nothing can replace my love for linux for web/router/firewall/mysql/backups/iscsi target/etc

its a good OS, and if you can, get R2, its like the server version of windows 7

I like server 2008 and the enhancements to group policy that it gives. Server 2008 doesn't make a good desktop when apps do version checking and won't install on it.

Alright I can get the R2 version. I think I can get both?! Not quite sure but I will definitely find out.

Thanks.

Dreamspark is free, but you need to be in a "higher-educational" institution such as Vocational School, College, or University. Verification is just making sure you are a student.

As for 2008R2, I LOVE it. People should just be aware that it is 64-bit only.

Also, Microsoft has other sites such as WebsiteSpark (http://www.microsoft.com/WEB/websitespark/) and BizSpark (http://www.microsoft.com/BizSpark/).

Yeah I'm in college, actually entering my last semester as an undergrad. I'm super pumped to be graduating in May.

So I downloaded both Server2008 and Server2008R2. Although I won't really get a chance to really check them out for a while; so I think I am going to run them in VBox when I get home to my Desktop. Because I can't do much on my old laptop and or my netbook.
