Welcome to our newest member, grafield

I know it's probably a somewhat random number, but nevertheless we're really close to those 1 million members now. Party? Will there be gifts? :)

Send any gifts you want to me, and I'll make sure they get distributed properly.

Nearly 1 million users, yet only a small fraction of them are active.

They'll become more active once I've distributed the presents. Send them on!

I'll also accept cash or booze.

Yes, that's to be expected IMO: this is a support forum. Most users register to get something fixed. And when it gets fixed for them they don't return, or if it doesn't get fixed, they won't return either (for the opposite reason).

Either way, the number of members is as good as any to get a party going I think ;)

Hmmm. Bribing people into becoming "active" members. Looks like a solid plan. You won't get the cash from me though...

the 1 millionth member gets a free distro, supported for 18-60 months with free upgrades every 6 months.

Same as everyone else.

It is really incredible that the Ubuntu forums are approaching 1 million members. IIRC when I joined this forum there were about 60,000 or so. Even that is a lot compared to most other distro's forums. By comparison, as of this writing, Fedora has 151,985 members in their forum. Suse has 40,760, Mandriva has 63,760, and Debian has 19,446. Most of the other less popular distros have perhaps a few thousand, if that. The Ubuntu forums are quite possibly larger than all the other distros forums combined!

BTW, how exactly is "active member" defined in the Ubuntu forums again?

Really !
OK, enough sarcasm already!
Go to any "Windows Forum", look at the huge number of members (??????)

My question of the day: Why hasn't Microsoft created a version of Internet Explorer' that will run on Linux ?
Just think of how many other programs (apps) that will !!

And remember, in Redmond Wash., there are many Linux users,
(pls post on campus board) OK guys : which Distro ?

.... Allen

the number seems to wobble around a bit, eg flick between 999,979 and 999,980. is this because of accounts being deleted, or maybe a synchronisation/caching issue?

The latter. Look on the bottom-right of the page; you'll see the server name (lingonberry or billberry). I believe lingonberry is more up-to-date than billberry, however they may alternate. They seem to cache at different intervals.

EDIT: Yeah, they fluctuate. billberry is ahead right now and says 999,989.

That just means there are more Ubuntu users I think.

I checked the 10 first in a Google search, the biggest was just above 50.000.
Then I thought, OK maybe Bing is better, but of course it wasn't.
Maybe they exist, but they are not extremely easy to find.

Whoohoo!

LOL :D
Not if they use Ubuntu Audio Tweaks.
