Am using OO under Ubuntu 8.04. Default language = English. Want to write document in German but cannot see how to find, download and install the German language pack which is compatible with this OO/Ubuntu. OO Help is no help.

It must be simple, for goodness sakes. Does anyone here know how it is done ?

In synaptic look for openoffice.org-l10n-de (or any other language you want, there are about 30,000 of them).

Thanks.

What does "in synaptic" mean ? I can't find a folder or anything with that name.

Sorry, disregard. Found it. Thanks. Paddy.

Update: downloaded the language pack and nothing has changed. No German spellcheck etc. available. Haven't a clue where to go from here.

The Ubuntu version of OOo has a strange way of packaging the dictionaries IMHO. An easier process is to install the dictionary extension, see [Troubleshooting] Spell check in OOo 3.x (http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=16512)
