I compared the quality of the sound in Ubuntu and Kubuntu.
Kubuntu seems to have a better sound output.

Does it make sense?

Results obviously vary. Tried Kubuntu Karmic and sound not only was of lesser quality then Ubuntu, the sound driver often failed in Kubuntu. So yea your mileage will vary.

If I remember correctly, Kubuntu uses a different sound manager.

Anyway, I'm not affected as I use pure alsa.

I've noticed the same thing.

I've also noticed Kubuntu handles YouTube videos when full screened better than Ubuntu.

me too. but in the past i've used different distros and desktops with varying degrees of sound quality.

the strangest thing i used to notice was that sound in KDE used to be louder than sound in GNOME.

I've never noticed this, but it's entirely possible I guess o_O
