So I just installed Ubuntu 7.10 (32 bit) on my new 2 me but old laptop Dell Inspiron 2200 I just o the laptop & I just a 1 gig stick of RAM to it & I plan to upgrade the HARD-DRIVE in the near future.

I come from a Windows XP Pro back ground & the reason I want to make to switch over to Linux is due to school. I am taking a basic intro to Linux witch is based around Ubuntu :)

So onto my question/help

I have been using www.nnscript.de on my XP lpatop & I would like to install a easy to use IRC program on Ubuntu 7.10.

I have tried sudo/apt-get & even searching for the packet for xchat does not come out on my distro

any help please...

keep in mind I am so noob I dunno not know what I am doing thats why I am taking a intro class to gain more info on Linux & to make the switch :KS

Thanks in advance for the help ;)

Hi,
sorry to start with a counterquestion, but does it have to be 7.10? You should start with a version that is still supported. Your Laptop shouldn't have any problems running the latest Ubuntu version 9.10.

Xchat should be what you are looking for. As far as I know, xchat was available for 7.10 but I don't know if it came with the installation cd and I don't think there is still a 7.10 repository out in the internet.

Have a look at http://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/add-applications/C/advanced.html to see how to install software in Ubuntu (it describes version 8.04 but should also work for 7.10).

Is there away to do a live update from Ubuntu 7 - 9 ? without losing all of my hard work that I have done for driver support ?

WOW I am just about updated to 9.10 so far I have 9.04 running strong & right now 9.10 is installing I like how easy it is to update Ubuntu :KS

Now I really hope to find a good IRC chat program that will be easy to use ;) & only if Adobe Photoshop CS3/CS4 was on Linux I would be in heaven

Welcome to the world of Ubuntu :-)

At http://help.ubuntu.com/community/InternetRelayChat you will find a list of irc clients available in Ubuntu.

There even might be a chance to get Photoshop running in Ubuntu: http://esdev.net/install-and-run-photoshop-on-ubuntu-linux/
If that fails, have a look at the alternatives: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/linux_software_picks_six_alternatives_photoshop
