HELLo!

PHP is PHP (version) 5.x. I reckon you're talking about PHP version 4.x, which is about 4-5 years back in time? Besides a few upgrades, it is the same language.
Anyway, the main difference between version 4 and version 5, is that 5 has a lot more functions, and added OOP functionality. The PHP manual contains all the examples and concepts you need, the rest is general OOP knowledge.

Happy codin'!

PHP is a scripting language used almost exclusively for web dev, there is no software dev done with php as far as I know. I know some people use it for scripting locally on linux thou.
