New Installation error with package manager

I installed karmic but there is something looking like a stop sign next to my volume control. When I point the cursor to it, it reads (E:problem parsing dependency depends, E:Error occurred while processing libmusicbrainz3-6 (New Version), Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/list/ and so on. Then it says run Package Manager from right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal.
apt-get udpate produces this error:

E: Problem parsing dependency Depends
E: Error occurred while processing libmusicbrainz3-6 (NewVersion1)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_karmic_universe _binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.


I can't install anything either from the package manager or from the terminal.

I will appreciate some help.

Try running synaptic gives me this error:

E: Problem parsing dependency Depends
E: Error occurred while processing libmusicbrainz3-6 (NewVersion1)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_karmic_universe _binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
