View Full Version : Need Coders for an Ubuntu (Derivative)

Hello, I'm creating a custom Ubuntu-based distribution and I need programmers/coders.
I'd make it Arch Linux-based, but I'll need someone to port the Ubuntu GUI installer. (Anyone interested?)

Why would I create an Ubuntu derivative?

I've found the system beeps in Ubuntu painfully loud.

I think we should have an option in the installer to choose the default colour scheme, i.e. light or dark.

Want a better package manager than Synaptic included

Want a lightweight Ubuntu that still has Compiz

Here's a list of features I'd want to include:

I put "both" if they're for both the lite and normal versions.
-B.U.R.G.(Fancy Boot Loader)
-An Ubuntu-esque Stylish Easy Installer-Both
-Animated Splash Screen
-Custom LiveCD Logo-Both
-Custom Login Screen-Both
-System Login/Logout Noise-Both
-Fancy Animated Screensaver (Logo)
-Desktop Environment w/Window system (Obviously)
-Games-2D- average quality (Lite Version)
-Frozen Bubble and SuperTux [2D HQ] (Normal Version)
-Alternative Software to ALL Software included on Macs-See below:

All included in both versions:

- GNOME
- Firefox
- Avant Window Navigator
- Openoffice.org
- Audacity
- Songbird
- GTKPod
- GIMPshop/Photo
- Brasero
-Evolution
-Avidemux
-Brasero
-Picasa
-Flyback/Timevault

I'm using the only Ubuntu offshoot that can read DMG files (Mac Data Cluster File).

I'd post this in the projects forum, but I doubt any programmers would see it.

So, what have you done so far?

I have all of the graphics, and GUI themes and customizations.
It can read DMG files, and that's the only difference from regular Ubuntu.
I don't know how to set defaults in a custom Ubuntu, either.

I just need a coder for:
Editing the Installer Changing the Default GUI Themes/Images and System Sounds

Start researching, pull the source code for the installer, learn Python.

Wahoo! Yet *another* Ubuntu remix!

People aren't going to switch distros for a few GUI customizations, graphics, a unofficial custom installer, and a few preinstalled applications.

To make a Ubuntu remix (or any other remix for that matter) that people will actually use, it has to have something unique about it. Take the new Back|Track 4 for example - There's nothing quite like it, hence it's popular (Although tbf, it did originate from Slackware.)

You mean like Mint ? Nah, they'd never go for it....

I've found the system beeps in Ubuntu painfully loud.
Much to my extreme astonishment and delight, 9.10 finally uses the sound card rather than the system beeper. In past releases I always had to disable the beep because on my notebook it's 200 dB (thanks, HP). Is your 9.10 still beeping?

The only time my system still beeps is about 5% of the time when I shutdown or reboot. Not a big deal. Most of the time I just suspend, which is always fast and silent.

Axos-Kubuntu 9.10 still does. :(

howefield-Yep, mine will be next Mint. :D

Slavik-I know what I'd have to do, that's why I posted this. (Not learning Python) ](*,)

Is anyone who posted interested in helping out?!

there is nothing more to say.

when gaim was started, the developer wrote code for it for a year before anyone started contributing code, same for linux and many other successful open-source projects.

Uhu, but, from the sound of it, this isn't going to be a gaim/pidgin sized progect. He's looking for some fiddiling with preexisting code for the installer and a couple of options added to the end. To me, it sounds fun :).

I emailed you.
What are you going to help me with, porting a GUI installer to Arch, or editing the Ubuntu installler to (change the name of the OS, and...) add the colour option?
