I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP Pavilion dv6449us. My wireless card is a Broadcom BCM4328. For more intricate details, see the terminal output at the bottom.

When I installed 9.10, I went ahead and installed the proprietary hardware driver for my Broadcom wireless card. (I've done this with previous distributions of Ubuntu w/o incident). This driver has gotten the job done, except in one rather painful matter: I cannot connect to networks that are WEP encrypted. (Yes, I have quintuple-checked to ensure I gave it the right password). Furthermore, I doubt it's a matter of "range", as my laptop is literally inches from the router. Also, other not-my-computer Ubuntu laptops have had no trouble connecting to my network.

I've given Ndiswrapper a go and have successfully installed it, but experienced the same behavior: no-go on WEP networks.

Here's the output of the basic terminal commands.

Seriously no one else has had or heard of this problem?
