Am I the only one in the UF that is excited about the new Apple Tablet PC?

I think it's time has come. I have actually dreamed about a PC tablet, then I saw one in Avatar that knocked my socks off.

Then images and news of an apple tablet PC started coming out and I really started following the news about this cool little piece of hardware.

If it could be a tablet, then put it on a stand with wireless charging, Apple's Bluetooth keyboard and the new mouse with no wheel so you could use it like a lappie or desktop, I could have the most versatile piece of hardware available.

I wish I had one now.

I agree.

I guess I'm more excited to experience the user interface and get familiar with the multi-touch screen coolness that they hype so heavily.

I could really use a product like this.

The Sports Illustrated video on this page it what I'm looking for in the future of computing. I hope to see it on the iTablet.

I agree that this IS the future.

Touch screen Linux with Gnome Shell would be fun to play with.

I disagree, I don't think its a certainty. First we need some kind of ergonomic revolution.

Actually more laptops should be like the Lenovo X200 tablet. Both a laptop and a tablet. It's nothing short of greatness.

I'm quite excited about it.

I don't think people really understand the impact it will have. It's just sad to see apple is alone in this. My initial thoughts when getting my iPhone was, - "This is what large screen computers is going to be like in 10-20 years in the future". Well, not exactly, but it clearly breakes the ties with the way we have built computer interfaces for quite some time now.
I'm sure many of you tremble (in fear) of that scenario, but IMHO the GUI model we have right now is legacy in so many ways. It's not built for utilizing screen estate particulary well, and not very good for transferring to a touch screen interface.
I see a marriage between a traditional GUI (of sorts) and a modern tiling/fullscreen WM manager in this new model the iPhoneOS is introducing. I just wish others would follow. I guess it's easier when you are the manufacturer, and the developer of the OS of such a device.

Maybe moblin and intel will provide something much like it in the future. It's just the hardware that is missing for now.

EDIT: I don't think this will replace ordinary computers, however. But replace a fair amount of them, sure.
Also, "Google slate/tablet one" anyone?

Sweet! But to be perfectly honest, i'd be very surprised if they released a working model of that thing in the near future. But we'll see i guess. That video clip was slick though.
Lets hope they don't just throw a trimmed windows 7 or windows mobile on such a device.

I'm not excited about it because current operating systems are not well suited for tablet use, at least what I have seen. Tablets so far also have been fairly underpowered. If Apple revolutionizes the tablet with the os and cpu then I will get excited about tablets being the future, but as of now I don't see it and I don't see companies trying to push the bounderies. Instead they are pumping out identical netbooks, which is another story.

I hate the credit Apple gets for "inventing" things. Tablet ideas have been around for a while and I'm almost certain that the microsoft one predates the apple one. If you really had a need for an tablet you would've known the variety of tablet products soon to be released by many different manufacturers. All of a sudden you need one because apple makes it?

That said, IT SHUR IS PURDY.

I think its more to do with reinvention really. The problem is other companies just seem to release things (MP3 players, smartphones etc and not put much effort beyond the initial design)

With tablets for example, people are just stickin Windows 7 or Android on it and telling you how great it is.

If the rumours of the [Insert possible name here] is true then Apple have been with publications and others to give their tablet a purpose. Plus its Apple, stick their logo on something and it sells like crazy

That dual screen thing sucks in my opinion.

I don't think I'm exited about the tablet PC, but the fact that Apple is releasing the tablet and the user interface should be the path for the future of computing - kinds like gnome Shell will come to be the modern desktop.

I think the tablet will be cool but the problem I heard about is that it will run on the constricted iPhone OS instead of the better OS X. I dont think that will be a big deal as I have heard reports of several other companies releasing hand held tablet PCs that when I get my hands on them they will be formatted straight to Ubuntu. Personally I have never liked the OS X and hate the iPhone OS. I feel forced to use MAC's weird for the sake of weird style of operations. Not to mention the completely unique formats that are not very compatible with others and cost way to much.

But thats just me. I dont like Apple products. :-({|=

Excited? No. Interested? Yes.

The problem being I don't know WHAT it is I'm interested in. Nobody does. It's all typical apple hype and speculation at this point. It could be Apple's answer to the Kindle for all we know.

So, if you're drooling over a tablet, you might wanna step back and clean yourself up....you could be disappointed.

Yes, i agree that the iPhoneOS is limiting. However, i would disagree that OS X would be a better fit for a tablet. As a user of OS X, and while i prefer it to most other OS'es, it does have several problems that the iPhoneOS doesn't have. I'm not saying i would like to run the iPhoneOS on my desktop computer right now, but in time, maybe things will change for the better. Most importantly, hopefully it will allow for more freedom os choice, such as running apps not distributed by the app store. I 'm only speculating here, but i think running apps in the background was a decision apple made with the iPhone because of it's rather limited computing power (of the iPhone), so that known limitation may (or may not) also be lifted from the tablet OS.

If the iPhoneOS doesn't improve, especially regarding freedom of choice, i would argue against it. The thing with the iPhoneOS though, is that it's a whole new way of interacting with the computer "desktop". It's not gtk/gnome with some patches to enable touch features. That, is what i think is exiting. Not the tablet itself. Nor that it is an "Apple" device.

What is this 'whole new way of interacting' ? I fail to see what it can offer that's not already out there. And I couldn't care less about ways of interacting if it doesn't provide the freedom and functionality that I require (which is why I never got an Iphone and suspect I never will).

It will be incredibly popular simply because (and mind you my friend isn't incredibly stupid) but I roughly quote :

Friend : "Hey did you see that new tablet from Apple?"

Me : "Yeah."

Friend : "It's so coooool. I want one! Touch screens make things easy for me! Everything became so much easier when I got my iphone!"

Me : "You do know touch screen computers have been out for a while."

Friend : "No way?!?!?"

If you've seen minority report, or any other sci-fi representation of a future computer interface, it's much more like the touch screen interface of the iPhone/Android then your average windows/linux pc. It does away with concepts like the usual mouse/keyboard/screen combo, start menu/task list/notification area and menubar that we are so used to. As i said before, it's also a marriage between a fullscreen WM and (hopefully) tiling WM (but with a much more mainstream approach) soon enough. It's also using concepts that have been around for a long time, such as applications iconifying "in place" such as windows 7 and the OS X dock does it. By it's very nature, it's built from the ground up to be very efficient in utilizing screen space, avoid floating windows and floating modal dialogs. This makes the "desktop" uncluttered.
In practice, it doesn't have to be "better" than the old ways of doing GUI interfaces, but it's a new start at least, and there is the possibility that it might correct old mistakes in the model we have right now as well. Only time will show i guess.
I guess most of that "can already be done today", but it's the package of it all that makes it interesting. I'm sure i could hack away at something that resembles such a device/OS. It would probably be barely functional, at best.
So, what i'm saying is, it will not necessarily be superior to the way we interface with computers today, but at least there is a chance it will. I'm sure there is usability/interface experts that can provide you with better insights than me. I'm having a hard enough time wording this as it is. LOL

And I couldn't care less about ways of interacting if it doesn't provide the freedom and functionality that I require (which is why I never got an Iphone and suspect I never will).
Understandable. Though i guess an android phone would probably give you the same insights. I Can't tell, cause i've never tried one.
Either way, I don't care if it's "Apple" branded at all actually. It's the concept i like.

They can't even do a half-way decent website, I doubt I'd buy hardware from them.
