I cannot install vmware tools on my Ubuntu 9.1 client, which is a vmware virtual machine. The main thing i need working is the bridged network connection. As it is, I can only use the NAT network between the host and client. Has anyone else ran into this? What can I do? What is the absolute fail-safe way of installing vmware tools? And why is it so difficult?

I have learned a lot about Ubuntu in the couple years I've worked with it off and on. But it is awfully frustrating because nothing ever seems to work without constant fiddling and tweaking. Why does it have to be so hard? I have wasted hours on this.
