Well thats pretty much the question. When did u last format ur hard drive. this is kinda an important question considering the fact that there's a new version release every 6 months.

A week or two back when I reinstalled 6.06 on my old desktop, and a few days ago on my main desktop (currently free from Windows, including recovery partitions. A home-made set of recovery disks is lurking around somewhere "just in case")

Yesterday, and about 30 times in the last month. I'm bored with my computer atm.

My /dev/sdh drive (the one I try distros on) about 80 times in the past 3 months. Sometimes every half an hour (Icehuk can vouch for that)

Nope, my other computer has had XP installed and not been reformatted since 2005. My Fiancés laptop has not been reformatted since 2006 when we installed Mandriva 2006.

I don't think BTRFS will come to Ubuntu.

I haven't done it either. Setting with dual boot Windows XP now. Waiting for the next LTS in April. Will install over everything. Backup? I send what I want to keep over to my Yahoo then bring back when I need them. Pictures, addresses, stuff like that. Hey, what good is it if you don't use it right?

Why not? ext4 is just a stepping stone on the way to btrfs. Anyway, to answer the question, I haven't done a full hard drive format for two years now (since I switched to Linux). I have, however, reformatted and shuffled around various partitions since then. I last formatted a partition a week or two ago.

BTRFS is an Oracle file system that is being developed to give ZFS like features on Linux. Oracle just bought Sun, the company that owns ZFS. It wouldn't make very much sense to continue to develop btrfs when you can now license ZFS anyway you want.

2007 was my last whole disk format.

Since then I have only changed the partitions. I got a special data partition which I do not back up.

Wut? No Karmic?

Well, I got an external hard drive and formatted that, then I formatted my old portable one to NTFS. It's part of the death ritual :P
(Actually, I just needed something for holding on to the installed files for games in my Windows partition. There isn't enough space on the local hard drive, so instead of uninstalling stuff I move the installed files to the ext. hard drive until I want it again. Probably a bad idea, but it works!)

Surprisingly, it has been about 10 days. I told myself I would go an entire semester without changing the operating system. We'll see. :D

Hmmm about 3 weeks on my laptop. Never formatted the entire disk on XP on my netbook. I made a new partition and installed Arch on it. That was a while back. As for my desktop I just wrote over the XP partition with a Windows 7 partition. And left the Arch install alone. See I use XFS so I don't ever forsee myself needing to update the filesystem therefore no need to reformat. I don't ever see myself not using Arch on my desktop. Maybe on my second hard drive for my laptop might get some other flavor of linux but for the time being Arch is here to stay on here as well.

I formatted my / and swap partitions about a week before Ubuntu 9.10 was released. I plan to wait a couple of months after Ubuntu 10.04 is released.

I may not format for the new release if the upgrade goes smoothly.

Whole drive wipe was 3 weeks ago, during setup.
Format of one partition was a few days ago.
