View Full Version : Podcast resurrection?
RobinC@Amethyst

Now a lot of the podcast chaff has fallen away, does anyone want to see the Full Circle Podcast resurrected?
Prepared to step up and give it a go if we can put together a panel to produce some interesting (and hopefully entertaining) content.
Any volunteers?
If we do this...
Next question is what kind of podcast do we make it? It needs to be a broad-based magazne format which will add some value to the FCM 'brand'. what content headings should we include? RC

It's tricky, because the podcast format itself doesn't lend its self well to things like tutorials or visual things, so it might be an idea to maybe be more news/discussion based?
As long as it's family friendly and interesting that's all that matters to me :)
Would it be weekly?

I think you should include the My Desktop feature... ;) :D

Hm, not so much tutorial/how-to (leave that for the magazine), although something like the 'man-minute' tips could work.
Prefer the news/discussion format, as we can take contributions and it will add something additional to the magazine.
Frequency - I originally thought monthly on the back of the magazine release schedule, however; if news/discussion-based, could be shorter and more frequent. Depends what kind of team we can put together to produce it! RC.

Yeah, that's a pretty good idea, you could discuss a command for some length of time. Maybe even discuss whatever is in the Command & Conquer article? But if you wanted to discuss something else then go for it.

It could be a 15min weekly podcast discussing the weeks news (remember, when it comes to news, I don't mind featuring non-Ubuntu news in FCM) and a command. But, of course, you can only put out the podcast when you can manage it, but it would definitely need to be regular.
I personally prefer weekly podcasts since a month is too long to wait, I end up forgetting about it.
Go for it... :)

Frequency is dependent on a #team# committed to production. Weekly is nice idea once we get into a groove.
BTW was going to contact Matt Rossi and discovered he and Nicola C started the PenguinCentral podcast (http://pcpodcast.org/?cat=3) with a couple of mates. Only Episode 1 October '09 so far. RC

Yeah I said that to Matt when he was starting it, it's got to be regular as clockwork, otherwise people will just ignore it.
I'll put a bit in my FCM#33 editorial directing people to here if they're interested in it and they can PM/email you about it. That OK?

One other thing that might make the podcast easier to make:
You know how you see a news programme on TV and they'll have the main presenter and they'll switch to various reporters for various stories, how about doing that? Where each reporter (like, say, Ed submitting an Ubuntu games report) would submit an audio file and someone is the main reporter who would introduce things, mention things, and probably stitch the whole lot together.
Just an idea... I'm thinking aloud (by keyboard). :D

A podcast should be more of a discussion than a report. I much prefer to see discussions between the host of different news items, far more interesting to listen to.

I'm with Ed (glad of the offer BTW) the better, as in more lively, podcasts have a panel format. As I've found in some other audio projects, the wider range of voices you can get the better.
That said, no reason why we can't have some reportage segments and a discussion after.
Also like the idea of listeners submitting audio clips with comments/questions/feedback.

Not sure if the email address is still live, but I drop admin an email to ask if it can be sorted. For the moment, in FCM#33, I'll direct people to this thread to get more details, or get in contact, until the podcast@ address is up and running...

Been doing some thinking and research. There is no reason why not Full Circle could be the Ubuntu podcast. There is not many to my knowledge. There is the Ubuntu UK Podcast and the Ubuntu podcast, run by some americans, but that has now gone inactive.
Talking about the magazine would be important, maybe do a section on the podcast before the next issue of FCM is out to do a quick preview of whats in the next issue. But it will be important and to keep the podcast going to talk about ubuntu relating stuff.
One key problem with podcasts, is lack of content to talk about. If we widen our topics, it will keep the podcast going. Also, one a week maybe too much for some people or we may run out of topic. I think we could get a way with one every fortnight.

Keep in mind that you must speak clearly and not too fast. I tried listening to the UK podcast once, but found that while I understood what was told, it was too exhausting as I had to turn up the volume and keep my attention at 100% all the time. Besides, there was too much chit-chat between the two hosts in-between IMHO.
ronniet
January 21st, 2010, 07:53 PM
Yeah, definitely. Whoever is on the podcast would need to remember that a lot of our readers are not English speaking, so the presenters would need to have good sound quality and speak clearly.
I doubt subjects would be a problem as the podcast could discuss all the latest LINUX news, I empasise Linux as news and what-not doesn't need to be just Ubuntu... and there's no shortage of Fedora/Android/etc. news to cover each week.
Obviously we can work together, as in the podcast would mention the magazine and the magazine can carry a full page ad for the podcast.

I can't agree with this point of view, I think the ubuntu uk podcast divulges relevant information in a concise way and adds interesting opinions of the presenters. I think it would be more tiring to listen to if it contained just pure factual information with no chat or opinion, but I can appreciate it must be more difficult for a non native English speaker - it is however the ubuntu UK podcast!
If you think ubuntu uk has too much chat have you tried listening to linux outlaws :D (However I happen to love their chat enough to listen to it twice a week (once live and once recorded )

Outlaws, U-UK and Tux-Radar are regular listens so we have examples to emulate (but not copy). All we need now are some willing volunteers! RC

No I haven't, and I probably won't ever. I've found that pod casts are generally not my thing, and I would rather read it than listen to someone talking with badly equalized mic's and differentiated volume between the hosts.

Whats the latest?
RobinC@Amethyst
February 1st, 2010, 12:42 AM
Podcast latest: now the call to action is out in FCM #33, need to give it a few days for volunteer podcasters to declare interest before we put together a panel and schedule our first recording.
So far got me, chewitt and Dominus Sapiens (aka Dave Wilkins) on the team.
We could use indication from volunteers as to any special interest or expertise in Ubuntu/Linux.
Dave likely to cover Linux gaming and emulation. I bring monstrous ego, arbitrary opinion and absolutely no in-depth knowledge of any topic whatsoever.
Preferred days/times (including timezone) for recording appreciated.
On technical front I have added to the Top 5 thread: Top 5 Audio Conferencing Tools, in order to garner tips for reliable, good quality panel recordings. Any pointers on this welcome as otherwise we're looking at Skype and plugins. Empathy, anyone? RC

February 4th, 2010, 02:44 PM
Right! I'm guessing the best way to get some attention is to make an episode and get started.
Dave and chewit: lets go for a planning session. My robincamethyst [at] yahoo.com mail or messenger account is working or we can agree a time to jump on the full circle IRC channel.
Anyone else interested: get in touch. RC

One other thing you could do is email admin (admin@fullcirclemagazine.org) and ask him to send out a mailing list shoot asking for help/volunteers or to give details of when you're having a meeting?
Good luck with it!

Looking forward to the podcasts. Can I make a suggestion, I don't know if it was already made, but in addition to everything mentioned, try to keep it to a specific time limit. Too long drags on, 15 - 20 min podcast is just my opinion of a good time limit. It could be longer, the main thing is stay consistent with the time, and don't go over. Just my 2 cents worth, you can take it for what it is worth. :)

Hi RobinC@Amethyst.:) Yes, like biker955 posted above, the ogg link for the podcast does not download (I prefer ogg.). I went ahead and downloaded the mp3, instead.
Congratulations on a very good 1st episode. I liked the ahem, commercial...too funny.:) It sounded like all of you had a good time making/recording the episode, good to hear it. My only advice for future episodes, would be to include some step-by-step "How to's". Overall excellent, keep it up and have fun, too.:)
Back to the ogg link, once it is fixed, would you, if you don't mind firing off an e-mail to distrowatch.com. I had tried Distrowatch 1st for the ogg download file, or let me know it is fixed and I shall e-mail them. Thank you.:)
By the way, cool cat picture. He/she looks happy (smiling), very nice cat.:) Peace.

Enjoyed the podcast myself. Robin, you kept things moving! That is good. Some pod casts tend to become long and drawn out. 30min is a good target to shoot for, at least in my opinion. A how to wouldn't be a bad idea, however it may be a challenge to keep it hoping and not drag on in a how to. Perhaps a how to overview, with a link to the how to in a blog or something? Just a thought. Also as just a thought, perhaps you could have various guests throughout the show, perhaps some full circle article writers? Or others that would be willing to pitch in just for a show? I think you all had alluded to that in the show. Love the title!

A suggestion, though I'm not sure I'm in the right place for it. The raspy almost Batman-like old man voice isn't good. Actually, he sounds a little like the psychopath in Joyride, but more generic. It just doesn't sound good in my opinion. So I was thinking, alternatively, why not go for something that sounds like the Ironman/Robocop voice? That would go with the technology theme of the show too.
The British accented lady's voice on the other hand is delightful and attractive. I may dream about what she looks like next time I fall asleep. I'll be lucky to get to first base even dreaming though, because it would trigger my awareness that it must be a dream, awakening me. Then I won't be able to fall back asleep and it will be all the fault of your podcast. :P
Added this in: I forgot to tell you I really like your podcast. I'm happy I was able to catch yours at the very first episode instead of coming in after the 100-episode mark like I usually do. Good luck and I'll be listening.
And on second thought, forget what I said about the voice thing. It will grow on me, I'm sure. Besides there are things you can't do with a reverbed voice, such as the superhero promo. It would have been misleading. I'm the guy you invite to a party to ruin any chance of having any fun, so take any suggestions from me with a grain of salt.

Well, I had a listen to it as well, and I quite enjoyed it. However, one of the hosts was kind of hard to hear. Not sure what the name was, but maybe it was Dave? Anyway, I listened through headphones, so I heard mostly what he said, but it was a bit tough to have to concentrate all the time he spoke. I dunno what would be technically feasible for you, but speaking with maybe 10% less speed would certainly help as well.
Keep up the good work! :)

Arthur, thank you. And you are quite right; you are now first witness for the prosecution, the evidence for Dave to slow down!!!

Hehe. :D
Keep in mind that many (I think) of your listeners aren't that much used to British English, so by speaking somewhat slower you give us non-English people a better chance to hang on. I'm from Norway, btw.
But the speed wasn't the only problem, hut also the volume level and maybe the quality as well on Dave's track. When listening through headphones, I can obviously not turn the volume too much up, or the other hosts would burn a hole through my ears. ;)
Well, perhaps I should be careful with the criticism, or you'll tell me to go record my own podcast, in "best" open source style. :p
