I just read somewhere that ubuntu linux has approximately 8 million users. If every one of those 8 million were to donate just one cent to ubuntu, that would be a fat $80,000 going to the guys that make this incredible operating system. Hey, those guys have stomachs and needs, too! Just sayin' ;).

PS - The dev's and this community friggin' rock! kudos

Canonical is a for-profit company, I don't think they really need our money. If you want to donate, give to an organization that is non-profit. Like the Electronic Frontier Foundation or some miscellaneous software project.

Does buying something at the Ubuntu shop (http://shop.ubuntu.com/) count?

Absolutely nothing wrong with donating to either in my opinion. However, I didn't pay a cent for my Ubuntu distro.

I think buying stuff from the ubuntu store counts. I my self bought a ubuntu
beanie and t-shirt. I think i would also donate in the future. This is a great os
and community :)

I bought a cd before... i know that they take some profit in those cd's.. it would be irrational for them not to

I have no reason to think purchases from the ubuntu store wouldn't count.

(yes, "rawk" lol)

The Ubuntu t-shirt & lanyard I have from the shop have drawn the occasional comment.

I bought two mouse pads a couple months ago. They didn't cost much and were great quality mouse pads, I recommend them to everybody!

I donate to other FOSS projects. Not Ubuntu, Canonical does not need your money.

Donating will always be a personal choice. It's simple quid pro quo. Ubuntu (canonical) takes care of my needs, and I take care of theirs. I watched your rant regarding ubuntu and you make legitimate points. More reason for me to donate to my favorite operating system so that those needs have to funding to be addressed. Stand behind that which takes care of you.

PS. No one put a gun to anyone's head and said use ubuntu. No, we use it because of our own personal choice.
