ERROR : Please check installation media or your cd-drive

hi im trying to install ubuntu on my dell dell dimension 1100 (DE051) and halfway through the installation it says that i need to check the installation media ,clean the cd-drive or replace the hard drive.
please can you help as i have tried at least 12 distros and none will install.i can boot live cd but nothing else.

I would be suspicious of your hard drive, do you have a way to test the drive? If you are failing on over 12 distros I would start there.

Do you have Windows loaded at all? Check event viewer for any mention of "disk" under system.
