I have an ATI video card that has HMDI output, but it should not be the default for sound. Honestly I feel dumb for not even knowing how to use it, there's no jack anywhere on it, but it doesn't matter as I need my soundcard for other things anyways. Only this ATI part is found.

In the "Sound Preferences" -> Hardware tab, there's only one:
HD48x0 audio
1 Output
Digital Stereo (HMDI) Output

Nothing in input tab, just the one in output tab.

Sound worked in 8.10 and windows (I removed all those partitions to start clean). I am from windows and am a near total noob here. I can't really tell the difference between what needs technical support and what needs a bug report, but this is a fresh install.

Go here it might fix your problem.

it's a kernal problem. there is a bug and it doesn't update the kernal when installing.. hope this helps.
other wise. might make sure that the drivers are installed.. I found that nvidia drivers are not installed by default sometimes.

Tried it, didn't change anything.

Still haven't got it going. Did the System Testing and submitted that. Is that all that needs to be done for a bug report, or how would I go about that? Use Launchpad also?

I'm trying to hold off on changing too many things myself, would rather see it fixed than just break it into working, if possible.

Nevermind, the card just slightly came out of the slot somehow (even while screwed in) when the video card was put in (I guess?). Detects fine.

That means the "System Testing" report was false. Can/should I fix that? (and how?)
