whichever version i try gets stuck with an xserver at 256 color depth!

I don't think an imac g3 is capable of running 9.10. If you do get it running I would imagine it would be quite slugish.

im using it right now to post on these forums. the speed isn't too bad at all.

with the alternate install cd. i had 8.04 working fine after editing the xorg.conf with the steps from here (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCKnownIssues), but for some reason 9.10 doesn't have it.
even after using Xorg -configure and editing that, it didn't work. it wouldn't even boot x!

how exactly would that help? anyway, the problem has been solved now.
