hi.. i live in india, specifically mumbai.
i am planning to buy a good mp3 player which also supports ogg and flac of around 2-4 GB capacity.
I don't know where to ask these kind of questions so this, being a linux community, was my first choice to ask.
I don't plan to buy anything over the Internet (although i may do so if there is no other option)

^^^Looks like Cowon players support these formats.

You can look for a demo in a Chroma store. I have seen Cowon players in Chrome's Santa Cruz (W) & Juhu outlets.

I thought some SanDisk players had ogg support too, but I don't have one so I can't tell if they're actually "good". Let us know if you found a nice one!
cheers.

I recently got a Samsung YP-U5. I don't know about getting them in India, or about their flac capabilities but I do know this: they have excellent sound quality, support drag-and-drop transfer protocols and play .ogg files.

You can buy it on-line here (http://www.play.com/Search.aspx?searchtype=allproducts&searchstring=samsung+u5&page=search&pa=search&go.x=0&go.y=0) (yes, I know you said you'd rather not buy on-line, and I have no idea what shopping on-line in India is like, but I shop here where I am...)

I really don't recollect because there were lot of PMPs on display. I would suggest you to visit one of the outlets alternatively try www.ebay.in. There are plenty of them and some of the sellers do offer "cash on delivery" option in case you are not too sure about online purchases.

Samsung YP-U5 has flac support. it's cost is also low. i was going for Cowon iAudio 7 , but looks like i have to consider this one too.

I have a 16GB Samsung YP-Q2 which plays ogg and flac. It's a cool and cool-looking little player, and I like it a lot. File transfer by dragging and dropping. Not good support for playlist files, but I either listen to albums as a whole or drop music into folders for playlists to get around that. Getting videos to play is a pain as they have to be encoded (at least, I've not found an Linux-only alternative yet) on Emodio which I run on Vista in a Sun Virtualbox. For the price, though, which was about $116.00 in the Spring of 2009, I'm very happy with it. I don't know of availability outside of the US.

Sanza Fuze for me. Change the USB mode to MSC. Then works great with Gpodder for my podcasts. Also works with Rhythmbox for your music. Finally for audio books, just drag them into the default folder Audiobooks on the fuse.

Its the best sounding player I have owned, You can play ogg, but also FLAC! Before this one I had a Ipod video and Ipod mini. They worked with Itunes and nothing else. The Fuse was built for Ubuntu. :KS

SanDisk has supported Ogg and FLAC for a while. Their current batch of players have very good reports about sound quality. They tend to be affordable in my experience and make a good choice for a flash-based player.

Rockbox can also be installed on certain models of SanDisk Sansa as well as certain Cowon Iaudio players.

Doesn't that void the warranty??

Yes, it does, but I treat my Rockboxed Cowon D2 with a lot of care.
