I'm just wondering how many of you guys are from the Pittsburgh area (Western PA essentially, preferably on the eastern side of Pittsburgh). Would be rather interesting to create and ubuntu linux user group for the people in my area.

St. Vincent, not that far from me. I'm in the northern part of the county. Don't go by there much now...nice looking college though (from a distance at least...don't go near it at all).

I live about 30 miles out of Pittsburgh in Northwestern Westmorland county.

If you look at the shape of the county and can see that that it's kinda shaped like a cow I live in the neck of the cow:

It's a bucket! But of course, someone from out there would think it's a lampshade!

C J Pro you may want to join the existing "NU Ubuntu Team" (Northeastern United States of America Ubuntu Local Community Team; ME,NH,VT,MA,RI,CT,NY,NJ,PA,DE,MD,DC,VA,WV)

We have many members from PA,...and as a regional group we are more able to combine our resources for effective marketing, distribution and education....and you can be a regional Team leader for the Pittsburgh area...

The official users forum is here:

We've got quite a few members here at the University of Pittsburgh who do.

We (I'll get to who 'we' are in a second) passed out almost 100 Ubuntu CDs at the Freshman Activities Fair, along with how to get Linux to work with Pitt's network. Many freshmen who already ran Linux just got that info.

'We' refers to the club that one of my good friends started, PittGeeks. We plan on doing more Linux advocacy in the future, this is the first year of our club. I'm sure many of our members would be quite interested in joining a Ubuntu Users Group...

I'm in school in DC right now, but during Xmas and summer I split between my dad's house in Shaler and my mom's in Robinson. I switched the computer at my mom's house to Ubuntu (Dapper, figured LTS was a good thing to have there as I don't feel like updating them often or giving them Edgy which, well, yeah, they don't wanna deal with bugs...in fact the whole point is me not getting calls about Windows bugs) over Thanksgiving, though.

My ex is up in Pittsburgh using Ubuntu though. I'll tell him to visit this thread.

Hey everyone,

I work in downtown Pittsburgh and live west of the city. It's nice to see a Pittsburgh thread here on the forums, and in the NE group. I work with a group of people who really are into Ubuntu, so that can add even more people to a 'user group' if it was created.

Rock on

Wow, I phased out for a couple of months there. Had to reread through this topic and I'm quite pleased at the number of people in this area who are interested in a Pittsburgh Ubuntu Users group. The problem for me is that whereas the rest of you appear to live within Pittsburgh itself, I live in the rural area surrounding Pittsburgh. Driving into Pittsburgh becomes hectic for me and takes a while.

Hello Pitt Ubuntu friends!

I live in Shadyside.
Still feel quite new to Ubuntu and don't know very much, but it works great got my old desktop to quit crashing all the time and it installed super quick.

Can even get into my Firstclass server because they happen to have a beta client that works in Linux!

I would be very interested in a Pittsburgh Ubuntu group.
I figure with CMU down the street there has to be lots of students with the brains to make the most of this awesome tool.

-Best regards.

You should work on developing the Pittsburgh Launchpad site further:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntuinpitt (https://launchpad.net/%7Eubuntuinpitt)

Also develop a Pittsburgh site on the Wiki:

Also someone should PM a request for a Pittsburgh forum to Ubuntu-Geek here at ubuntuforums.org

To be honest i didnt expect to find this many users. Two of the call center analysts who were hired recently (im in desktop support but talk to those guys all the time) use ubuntu. Wheni wear my ubuntu polo to work people recognize it and ask me questions. I've told probably 20-30 people about ubuntu at work. If they get really interested i show them my macbook pro (santa rosa) and huge cinema display with dual cubes. Because citrix makes a linux client, most of my work apps are easy to run without the use of my virtual XP (although that runs flawlessly for the stubbern programs that dont run in my linux).

I'm not technically FROM Pittsburgh. I'm FROM further East than my Western Friend from Philly. Having said that, I currently LIVE in Pittsburgh and have for the last 7 years (Monroeville), so I guess I qualify. The question is do you have enough vicadin to pass around for those of you that say U-Ins when this *nix NOOB shows up at the newly formed group?

B

dark_harmonics
March 3rd, 2008, 01:07 AM
No vicadin needed :) Although the last part of your sentence was completely greek to me. Guess im a n00b lol!

zardrube
March 3rd, 2008, 04:05 AM
Sorry about those errors in judgement on my part - U-Ins was to be phonetic for the funny way people from Pittsburgh say you. I can see how with Ubuntu and Unix the U could get confusing and my point be missed in writing. the *nix I have seen in BSD, and Linux forums, and I take it to mean all forms of and flavors of Unix.

I apologize for not adhering to rule #1 - there are too many three letter groups we have to remember at work, we don't want to remember them for fun. i won't let it happen again, at least not today. sleep well.

cheers.

Haha not that big of a deal. I do recognize *nix (from being aroudn the forums alot) but usually i type U-ns as yinze lol. Pittsburgh-ese just doesnt type out well. Yinze like pop and peirogies n' at?
