So i was going to post this on androidforums.com but it doesn't seem to be sending me my activation email, so I thought I'd air the idea here:

Basically, I want to be able to type out an SMS message on my PC, but have my Android phone send it.

It could be done in one of a few ways:

Via an app for the PC matching the Android one, and linking the pair via USB/Bluetooth/WiFi

Via the Android App checking emails on a specific IMAP address. When that address receives an email in the correct format, from a specific senders email address (say, the mobile number you want to send to as the email subject, and be able to say to the phone that you I only want mehall_AT_mehall.co.cc to be able to send messages, so nobody starts sending spam using my account) then it will send the email content as an SMS.

I think the app "Phone Manager" is supposed to allow for this, using bluetooth.

Yeah, I remember I could do this with Address Book on my iBook and my old Nokia 6300. However, I don't know if this will work on anything <2.0 so unless you have a Droid or Nexus One, you'll probably have to wait/pray for it to be released for your phone. 2.0 has added bluetooth functionality.

I don't see that app in the Android Market :/

EDIT:

Ahh, thanks steev182

I have the T-Mobile Pulse (UK) so I need to wait.

Rumour has it it'll be on 2.0 by the end of the month though (:

Phone manager is an app for Ubuntu, it's in the repos. It apparently lets you send sms to a (any?) bluetooth phone. Can't try it right now as the computer I'm on doesn't have bluetooth.

Not exactly what you're talking about, but I do this all the time with Google Voice.

If I go to the GV website and send an SMS, it's about the same thing as sending a text message from my phone.

I was looking for this kind of thing too but haven't found anything. There is Android screencast, which basically will let you use your phone from your PC (it has to be connected), so you could text from there. You can find it here: http://code.google.com/p/androidscreencast/

Oh I found some apps that do exactly that:
1st there is DroidMessenger, which uses a web interface from their site to send the sms, so you would need an active internet connection in both your android phone and pc. Its here
http://www.droidmessenger.com/
2nd is DesktopSms, for this u need installed the android sdk. http://code.google.com/p/desktopsms/

that thing is cool.

Doesn't seem to let me do much with my phone though... Damn me having a non-top of the range phone....

Correction, looked at the docs for android-screencast

Only lets you use Keyb/mouse control if your phone is rooted, which I haven't done. (I'll make that a yet, I'm mulling it over)

android-screencast works perfectly with a rooted phone: thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8672011#post8672011)
