View Full Version : [SOLVED] 9.10 install on M4N78 Pro hangs on restart

I just upgraded my system's motherboard with an Asus M4N78 Pro and did a clean install of 9.10. The install seems to go fine but when it finishes and does the final restart I seems to get stuck at the place you'd normally see the GRUB menu. Instead all I see is a black screen with a flashing cursor in the left corner.

This isn't just a long boot, its stuck. It never progresses past this point.

During the install everything seems fine. Video, network etc. I've tried several reburned CDs and I get the same result each time.

For the record I've installed Ubuntu as a single partition an IDE drive. The bios is set to boot from that drive.

How the heck can I figure out what is happening? Is there a way to boot and display any and all messages displayed? Is this thing hanging in GRUB somewhere? Are there any boot/kernel parameters I can install with that'll help?

I'm handcuffed and blindfolded here. Anybody have any ideas?

Mike

I can boot fine into Ubuntu with the "Run Ubuntu without any changes to computer" option on the install CD. I am responding to this post from this computer.

I noticed that I am getting an ECC error and it is not enabled in my BIOS. I was taken to a bug regarding ECC that suggests I enable it. I'll try that but I also ran the Boot Info Script from presence1960. Here is the results file. I don't see anything suspicious here.

Any thoughts?

Actually, I think I just figured it out. It looks like GRUB is installed on one of my SATA (raid array) disks rather than the IDE boot drive /dev/sde. That would explain a ton. The other thread I mentioned actually describes this issue and to correct it. I'll see if I can fix it.

Pretty strange when an entire thread is you talking to yourself. Hopefully somebody else will benefit from this.

Its a little strange. I'm trying to install grub on /dev/sde and here is what I get:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sde
Installation finished. No error reported.
This is the contents of the device map /mnt//boot/grub/device.map.
Check if this is correct or not. If any of the lines is incorrect,
fix it and re-run the script `grub-install'.

(hd0) /dev/sda
(hd1) /dev/sdb
(hd2) /dev/sdc
(hd3) /dev/sdd
(hd4) /dev/sde

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo update-grub
grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /.

Any idea what this error means?

I went ahead and rebooted anyway with the grub error and I'm happy to report that I am booting off my proper hard drive now. I hope my mutterings helps somebody.
