View Full Version : [ubuntu] Not able to see desktop

Hi Here is the problem,
Last night when i tried to turnoff my machine and when i clicked on the user name it did not dropdown the menu where i could see restart, log off, shutdown etc. I manually switched off...

Today when i start ubuntu, it gave me log in screen i entered password and when it takes me to desktop all I can see is a failsafe terminal.......

How can i fix this? I used dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but it did not work...

Pls help me

Have you tried sudo startx?

Have you tried sudo startx? i tried gnome-session& command now i am able to see desktop but i can't see gnome global menu, and it always opens tomboy, just by itself. conky is also in weird state. what should i do? i logged off logged back in, then same failsafe, and again typed gnome-session& ...repeat the same above....??not only that my gnome panel where it shows apps, system etc...is gone...anyideas?
