Hi, I try to play DVD's (I have Ubuntu 9.10), but when I insert the DVD the system either removes the DVD player from the the file system or it recognizes the DVD as an empty one. It does these randomly with the same DVD. Either case I cannot play it. Can you tell me what can be the problem?

I have this same problem.

I know the drive is good, because it worked fine while I was installing 9.10.

Anyone know how to troubleshoot this problem?

That does not mean it is good. A DVD ROM or Re-Writeable can have it's DVD functionality die but still read CD's. I have had a couple that have done that to me over the years.

Don't rule out a bad drive.

I tried an external DVD/CD drive, too, and it was also not recognized.

Now, maybe I have one bad optical drive, but the external drive works fine with a WinXP box I have, so I'm leaning toward something in ubuntu, but I can't figure out WHAT.

How can I troubleshoot the optical drive I have?
