i have a 64bit capable processor but have installed ubuntu 9.10 32x because i didn't know when i got the cd. Is there anything i can do to the update manager or something that turns my system from 32x to 64x?

As far as I know, you need to use the 64-bit version of the live CD and reinstall. There is no way to upgrade or update a 32-bit version to a 64-bit version. One bit of encouragement is that it really doesn't take that much to do a fresh install of Ubuntu, especially compared to how much time/work it takes to reinstall Windows. Depending on how many applications and customizations you like to have, a fresh install should only take about an hour.

You will need to reinstall. No way to "upgrade" from 32bit to 64bit.

But by reinstalling, you'll need to transfer your files onto external storage until you've installed the 64bit Ubuntu.
