Well, at one point I had really wanted to move to gentoo, and was waiting for the gui install... However, I'm loving Ubuntu a bit too much, so I probably won't try it on my machines (maybe in qemu though). I've learned to compile apps that aren't in the repos (mostly emulators or cvs versions of them) and everything is working nicely (even under dapper).

It still seems neat to have a really huge repo and build things from source as you do other things... I believe they do have binaries that are available for some stuff to, for those that don't want to compile.

Also, I'd like to mention I would just use and install gentoo, and then "rebuild" to optimize. You don't have to want to tweak things like mad to use gentoo (since everytime gentoo is mentioned these issues seem to come up.)

Gentoo is a great distro but no matter how many GUI's you put, its still takes too long to compile packages like X, KDE and gnome. This is especially bad if you are using a laptop. It's ironic that gentoo's main feature is also what turns people away from it.

About the speed difference, I used gentoo for a year and didn't notice a speed difference between ubuntu and gentoo. Maybe when loading gtk apps, gentoo loads it 1/2 second faster.
