What with Google becoming so ubiquitous and storing everything we do with their services - big brother style, I'm looking for good open source search engines. It seems, however, that they all need to be downloaded and installed.

Can someone please explain why?

Don`t know of any open source search engines, but if privacy is your concern, try scroogle.

Its not only about privacy, but more about Google becoming too much a part of our lives. I would like to support something open source.

Here is a list of ones I found:

Open source search engines

* DataparkSearch
* Egothor
* Grub
* Ht://dig
* Isearch
* Lucene
* Lemur Toolkit & Indri Search Engine
* mnoGoSearch
* Namazu
* Nutch
* OpenFTS
* Sciencenet (for scientific knowledge, based on YaCy technology)
* Sphinx
* SWISH-E
* Terrier Search Engine
* Wikia Search
* Xapian
* YaCy
* Zettair

@OP:
What's the matter with Google recording your preferences? They're the best and, chances are, you;'ll find what you're looking for FASTER on Google than you will ANYWHERE ELSE!

Unless, ofcourse, you got something to hide?

Don't kid yourself. Everyone has something they would not like someone else to know about. Even if there is someone has nothing to hide - why would they need to monitor them if they have nothing to hide?

If you do have nothing to hide, please provide me with your full name, home address, phone number, birth certificate and your last bank statement.

BTW - Scroogle gives exactly the same results as Google, just with a minimal interface with no tracking. I don't see how it is possible to get results slower on exactly the same search engine.

Finally, please don't use all caps and underlining inside your sentences and please check the date the OP posted.

Yacy (http://yacy.net/) - open source, privacy respecting, decentralized. Everything that monopolistic, invasive, centralized, dictatorial "nothing-to-hide" mentality is not... enough reason for me to use it and propagate it.

Something has to pay for Googles rapid expansion. Bing is growing pretty rapid ... won't be surprised what happens Microsoft starts storing your information.
