i would like to know how to change the login theme in ubuntu 9.10 not just the background...ive looked but no avail.

You can't. That's a theme for GDM 2.20. Karmic uses 2.28 which is a whole different animal.

Unfortunately you can't use the old themes at all. I think they should have made GDM 2 compatible with previous themes but too late for that now.

Try using this tool (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1358026) to change your GDM look. The main thing you're looking for is the GTK theme, which will change the look.

this still doesnt let me change the login window

download some themes for the login screen from gnome-look.org
the go to system>administration>login window> then click on the local tab on the dialogue box and click on add.
specify the location or target of the downloaded login screen themes and then add them to the existing ones. u can then make a choice of ur own.
