Hi, I was wondering if there was anyway to select certain programs to startup and to have them startup on certain workspaces.

This sounds like a tough one. I found this article about devilspie.

It sounds like you can use devilspie to set workspaces for applications and when they launch, they will launch in the selected workspace.

However, you need it to work on startup and devilspie needs to be running. Maybe part 2 of this question is to figure out how to order your gnome startup applications to have devispie be first, and I think I saw a thread a few days ago on it.

to make certain programs run at startup go into preferences -> startup applications.

if you want certain applications to start on specific workspaces you could try adding window rules in your compiz settings: in ccsm, go to 'place windows' and activate it; in the tab 'fixed window placements' add some rules where it says 'windows with fixed viewport'. you can check out the following link if you need more information about window rules: http://wiki.compiz.org/WindowMatching
