That's a very strange problem. I'd recommend upgrading the BIOS if possible.

checked and has the latest bios and no other changes since it was working on 9.04 and reloaded 9.04 to verify no aftermarket video drivers were in use
on 9.04

still not working I am not using login and mouse locks when I go to upper
task bar live cd and installed 9.04 ok 9.10 32 and 64 fail 10.04 fails 32 and 64---used a hard drive from anouther pc and works in low grafics mode
but second hard drive had nvidia drivers installed but not used could this be a hint or could it be installed and used this way till a fix is found or
for diagnosis of what to do? This PC is a buddy in another state and he wanted ubuntu one so I really need to figure this out

You are not alone. I spent hours trying to find an answer but it seems to be a bug with our built-in intel video. This is one reason I stayed with 9.04 since 9.10 and 10.04 beta2 both freezes as soon as I move the mouse. I do have another hard drive where I was able to use 10.04 beta2. This was by removing compiz-core completely after booting into recovery mode(I read this from doing google search). This is just a workaround so that I can play with 10.04 but until this is fixed, I'm staying with 9.04
